SUMMARY:Good Morning SLO | September
DESCRIPTION:A dynamic and informative 90-minute breakfast program specifically geared to San Luis Obispo business people. Held on the fourth Thursday of each month\, local experts focus on a wide variety of community and business topics. \nDeadline to register is 5 p.m. Sept. 24. If the program sells out\, we open a waiting list at the door at 7 a.m. and typically can accommodate everyone. \nThanks to this month’s sponsor: \n \nThis month’s topics include: \nDREAMING BIG\, DARLING \nCheck out Wine Enthusiast’s new 40 under 40 issue\, and you’ll find Ancient Peak’s Amanda Wittstrom-Higgins on the cover. The 2nd-generation dynamo is shaking up the wine world\, forging bold new initiatives including the mentorship program Dream Big Darling. She’ll share her motivations and what’s shaped her outlook along the way. \n\n \nSAILING ON SUNBEAMS \nThis summer\, a satellite the size of a loaf of bread unfurled its 18-foot sail and began soaring through space powered solely by sunlight. Behind the history-making LightSail 2 is a team of Cal Poly faculty and students working with Bill Nye’s Planetary Society. CubeSat Lab Director John Bellardo will explain the team’s out-of-this-world work. \n\nAB 5 & THE GIG ECONOMY | WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW \nMost of the hubbub over the recently passed gig-work bill surrounded drivers for Uber\, Lyft and other app-based services. But what does it mean for the rest of us? The landscape of contract work is is complex and ever-shifting\, so we asked Kathy Marcove to summarize the guidelines and potential ramifications of the legislation. \n\nECON 101 | A PRIMER ON TARIFFS AND TRADE \nSure\, trade wars and tariffs sound ominous for the global economy. But how do they really affect us here on the Central Coast? And what the heck is currency devaluation anyway? We asked Cal Poly economics professor Matt Coleto sort through the tangled web of trade policy and provide some local context on this international issue. \n\nSTEPPING UP MENTAL HEALTH CARE BEHIND BARS \nThe SLO County jail fell under scrutiny after high-profile incidents involving mentally ill inmates. It’s since instituted new policies and services and is now being recognized as one of 15 innovator counties nationwide by the Stepping Up Initiative. Chief Medical Officer Christy Mulkerin will share highlights of the changes and the impact they’ve had. \n\nHAPPY AS A CLAM IN PISMO? \nThe Pismo Beach Clam Festival has carried on celebrating the Central Coast’s favorite bivalve decades after they largely disappeared due to over-harvesting. Happily\, small clams have begun reappearing on the beaches. Cal Poly Center for Coastal Marine Sciences’ Ben Ruttenberg will dig in to whether we’re seeing a clam comeback. \n\nSOME ENCHANTED MORNING \nOpera San Luis Obispo will transport audiences to the tropics next month with its grand stage performance of South Pacific Oct. 12 and 13 at the PAC. The classic musical features elaborate sets\, lively dancing and beloved songs. Members of cast will give us a taste to send us off on an enchanted day.
