As in-person instruction begins again across our County\, kindergartner teacher\, Melena Smirl will share a look back at what this experience has been like from a teacher’s perspective and lessons she’s learned from the virtual classroom \n\nDAVID SLEW GOLIATH… OR DID HE?\nOne of the biggest news stories this year was of the unknown little investors stock-blocking the big hedge funds from shorting GameStop. While it made a good headline\, it certainly didn’t tell us the whole story. We invited finance professor Dr. Ziemowit Bednarek\, to breakdown the impacts of this stock market disruption.\n \n\nWHY PUBLIC ART MATTERS\nThrough uncertain times\, art acts as a visual beacon of hope and positivity. Owner of Badger Branding\, Katy McGrath has seen that firsthand through her work on the City of SLO’s award winning banner series. Katy will share how public art can not only contribute to a community’s identity\, but foster a sense of belonging and enhance the quality of life for locals and visitors. \n\nCOUNTERING COVID’S EFFECTS ON WOMEN AT WORK\nThe pandemic is having a devastating impact on women\, and the fallout has shown how deeply gender inequality remains embedded in our political\, social and economic systems. Public policy consultant and women’s & gender studies lecturer Christina Leferve Latner\, will share how community and business leaders can work to lessen these impacts and keep more women in the workforce. \n\nWINE FAMILY HISTORY\nIn the mid-1800s\, fortune seekers from around the world flocked to California\, but not all of them ended up in the gold fields. Many\, like the Dusi family\, settled in SLO County\, drawn by the Mediterranean climate perfect for planting a familiar crop: grapevines. Farmer and winemaker Janell Dusi will share her family’s story and how she has continued and grown that legacy. \n\nA NATURAL NEXT STEP\nRoxi Buchanan had worked at the same business for nearly fourteen years until the pandemic hit. Not one for down time\, she explored other ventures until the stars aligned and the opportunity arose to open her own pop-up shop at the Pismo Outlets.
