DESCRIPTION:*This is a hybrid event — attendees have the option to either attend in person or via Zoom.  \n“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience\, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. ” — Martin Luther King\, Jr. \n\nThis special Insight Studio event will dive into some root causes of discrimination\, bring together diverse perspectives\, and offer steps everyone can take to foster a culture of inclusivity. \nAfter a viewing of the short film\, Restrictions Apply and discussion of the SLO County Sheriff’s Unity Report on Systemic Racism\, participants will have the opportunity to examine the historical connection of diversity\, equity & inclusion in their every day lives. Dialogue will follow\, aimed at understanding the role individuals\, businesses\, and organizations can play to help bridge the diversity gap for the economic and civic future of our community. \n\nREGISTER NOW \n\nGuided by Dr. Joy Pedersen\, sociology professor Dr. Ryan Alaniz and writer and podcaster Jaime Lewis will lend their experiences and perspectives to this timely and vital conversation. He has volunteered with international organizations that are dedicated to improving the lives of marginalized groups and has collaborated on projects with United Nations University\, the White House\, and the International Federation of the Red Cross. His focus has turned to local issues including carceral education at the jail and CMC and inequitable racial/ethnic representation in positions of SLO leadership. He is the main author of Systemic Racism and Microaggressions in San Luis County\, recently published by the Sheriff’s Department. \n  \n\nJaime Lewis writes\, speaks and podcasts about the good life in California. That typically means food\, drink\, and travel\, as seen in her multiple food columns\, her podcast CONSUMED\, and speaking engagements. Lewis also makes a point of discovering where cultural markers like food\, drink and travel are inaccessible. She presses for diversity\, inclusion\, and discovery in her work\, including the short documentary she produced with R.A.C.E. Matters SLO Restrictions Apply\, which explores how racism in the housing market has shaped the “happiest city in North America.” \n\nMODERATED BY: \nDr. Joy Pedersen is the owner of Clarity Collective\, which provides coaching and consulting to help individuals and organizations achieve their full potential. Her role as a diversity and equity consultant includes facilitation\, training\, strategic planning\, and assessment to promote diversity\, equity\, and inclusion in the workplace.
