SUMMARY:August Good Morning SLO
DESCRIPTION:Your community newspaper brought to life. \nGood Morning SLO is our platform for sharing ideas\, news and inspiration. A monthly program that brings community leaders\, business owners\, nonprofit executives and staffers together\, and enables us to reconnect\, engage and learn from each other. \nOur goal is to provide insight into business\, community and legislative issues and share the stories of those making a difference. We want audience members to leave with ideas and information about how to better their personal and professional lives. \nGood Morning SLO happens on the fourth Thursday of every month except November when it is on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. \n\nFEATURED SPEAKERS \nA WHALE OF A TALE \nSome of the most amazing experiences in SLO are getting to see the humpback whales that spend their summers here. This year has been particularly impressive — not only have we had spectacular humpback displays\, but whales that rarely come to SLO have also been spending lots of time in our water. Morro Bay Whale Watching’s naturalist\, Amy McKellar\, will join us to share what an amazing summer this has been for whale watching. \n\nBRINGING GOOD FIRE BACK \nIn June this year\, members of yak titʸu titʸu yak tiłhini Northern Chumash Tribe brought good fire back to their ancestral lands in an incredibly powerful first-ever cultural burn in San Luis Obispo County on city-owned property OR first cultural burn…in generations. We’re honored to have Becca Lucas from ytt Tribe teach about the burn’s importance\, process\, and how collaboration helped make it a reality. \n\nSTATE PARKS STEWARDSHIP \nCentral Coast State Parks Association (CCSPA) has been leading our community in the education and protection of wildlife and their habitat in SLO County since 1976. Sierra Emrick\, a Los Osos native\, has taken over as the new Executive Director and will join us to share more about how her world travels and education have given her a deep appreciation for this work and the future of CCSPA. \n\nWORKING TOGETHER TOWARD A SLO FREE FROM OVERDOSE \nThe ongoing opioid crisis has impacted many\, and the number of drug overdoses in our county is still high. We’ve invited Kim Lacey\, founder of SLO Overdose Awareness Day\, to share more about the upcoming event and how the organization is working to create a healthier and safer environment through awareness campaigns\, education initiatives\, and community engagement. \n\nBEING BRAVE ABOUT ELECTION CONTENTION \nDuring this intense election season\, feelings of division can erode our trust in democracy\, but a local organization is building bridges by facilitating discourse with community members across the political spectrum and focusing on election integrity. Braver Angels co-director Cal Stevens will share how this work helped develop a practical guide on elections that signals hope about democracy and how our community can work together. \n\n70 YEARS OF APPLIANCE SALES \nAn iconic staple in our community\, Idler’s Home is celebrating 70 years\, a huge milestone as a local business. Siblings Bryan and Jennifer Idler\, third-generation owners and operators of the business\, will join us onstage to share more about their family business legacy\, successfully keeping their doors open for 70 years\, the state of the local appliance market and the future of Idler’s Home. \n\nDRUM PERKS \nDrum Perks Inc shares the joy of teamwork through drumming with people of all ages\, from school assemblies to corporate team-building and conference break-outs. Sean Sullivan will close out our morning with some high energy onstage. \n\nThank you to this month’s featured sponsor: \n \n  \nThank you to all the Good Morning SLO Annual Sponsors for 2024: \n  \n            \n  \n   \n  \n  \n           \n  \n     \n  \n
