SUMMARY:Insight Studio | Inside the Future of Modular Housing
DESCRIPTION:Cars aren’t built in parking lots\, they’re build in factories. Does that method have an application in the construction of housing\, and if so\, do pre-fabricated housing solutions have a future in helping to solve California’s housing crisis? Join us on Friday\, May 15\, as we meet with the Cal Poly project team and Volumetric Building Companies(VBC) leadership in Tracy\, California for a discussion about modular construction at an impressive scale. A tour of the working factory will provide valuable insight into how building a structure on an assembly line changes many of the traditional assumptions about development and construction. \n\n\n \nCal Poly’s newest 3\,500-bed student housing project is embracing a time-tested construction technique in a new and innovative way: prefabrication. While factory-built housing can bring outdated stereotypes to mind\, VBC is redefining what’s possible by constructing massive\, multi-story dormitory buildings offsite. Once delivered to campus\, these modules are lifted into place by crane\, connected floor by floor\, and rapidly become move‑in ready\, sometimes in a matter of days. They can even arrive with the furniture already installed! \n\n\n\nWhat you’ll experience:  \n\n\n \n\nA guided facility tour of Volumetric Building Companies (VBC)\, one of the nation’s leading modular construction manufacturers\, where entire building systems are fabricated under one roof with precision and speed.\n\n\n\nA real-world application of pre-fabricated housing unfolding in our own community. Members of Cal Poly’s Facilities Team will join us for the tour and a discussion about what this technology means for campus development.\n\n\n\nA conversation about the bigger picture. Modular construction is reshaping how communities tackle housing production\, affordability and sustainable development\, and this technology could help SLO County build faster and get more units online.\n\n\n\nWhy this matters to SLO. Housing is one of our region’s most pressing challenges\, and traditional construction timelines and costs make solutions difficult. Modular building approaches offer a compelling opportunity for SLO County\, and this trip will offer the opportunity to see it firsthand to understand what’s possible.\n\n\n\n \nEvent Details \n\n\n \nDate: Friday\, May 15 | 6 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. \n\n\n \nLocation: Volumetric Building Companies\, 2302 E. Paradise Avenue\, Tracy\, CA 95304 \n\n\n \nPricing: \n\n\n \n$120 for Members\, $180 for Future Members \n\n\n \nSchedule: \n\n\n \nDepart SLO by 6 AM in personal vehicles\, arrive at the facility shortly after 10 AM. Carpooling is recommended and the Chamber is happy to connect attendees for carpooling purposes. \n\n\n \n10:30 AM -3:30 PM: Tour\, panel discussions\, lunch and conversation in at the VBC facility in Tracy\, California. \n\n\n \n3:30 PM: Depart to return to SLO
