SUMMARY:SLO Museum of Art Presents | Leslie Sutcliffe: Mementos of Six Millennia
DESCRIPTION:Details\nThis installation consists of ninety-six panels\, of varying sizes any number of which can be assembled and reassembled in a multitude of ways. Initially\, the individual panels were inspired by the rich visual imagery in Italo Calvino’s Six Memos for the Next Millennium. This grew to include images from found sources like newspapers\, encyclopedias or the Internet. The wood panels are drawn\, painted and screen-printed. The panels exist as discrete entities that build sequentially to create meaning in the way words in a sentence or pages in a book create a narrative. But if the panels were pages of a book\, they would be unbound and could be rearranged or discarded. Within this work is the potential to physically choose and arrange panels in a way that creates meaning for the viewer that is independent of the artist’s intentions. Someone arranging the panels can use all of them or just a few\, leaving the remainder on shelves installed in the corner of the gallery. \nThe ability to create personal meaning is inherent in all works of art – often viewers find a connection to an artwork that is unrelated to the artist’s intent. This body of work by artist Leslie Sutcliffe plays with this truth and engages the viewer in an active dialogue. Each month of this exhibition\, a student or group of students will be invited to rearrange the panels\, creating new meaning and connections between the images and ideas present. \nAbout the Artist \nLeslie Sutcliffe is an emeritus art professor from Cuesta College where she taught printmaking and modern art history for 27 years. She was born in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania and currently lives on the Central Coast of California. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from The University of California at Irvine and California State University\, Fullerton. Selected exhibitions of her work include The New York Public Library\, The University of Minnesota at Morris\, California State University Dominguez Hills\, and The Brand Library in Glendale\, California. Her artwork and an essay were included in AGNI\, a literary magazine published by Boston College. \n

SUMMARY:W. Terrence Spiller Piano Recital
DESCRIPTION:Pianist and Cal Poly Music Professor Emeritus W. Terrence Spiller will present a recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday\, Jan. 12\, in the Spanos Theatre on campus. \nThe program will feature innovative works by three great keyboard composers: Johann Sebastian Bach\, Béla Bartók and Frédéric Chopin. \n  \nThe program will open with Bach’s buoyant “Italian Concerto\,” BWV 971 in F Major\, which demonstrates his mastery of the Italian “concerto grosso” style for orchestra. Bartók’s groundbreaking “14 Bagatelles” will follow in which the composer displays his new musical language through character pieces. \n  \nChopin’s “Four Ballades” will be featured on the second half. The monumental Romantic works combine his lyricism with dramatic virtuosity to tell “unidentified” stories. \n  \n“All three composers combine their compositional brilliance with great inspiration and insight\,” said Spiller. “Bach’s solo keyboard piece that successfully ‘imitates’ an Italian orchestral form; Bartók infuses short\, traditional character pieces with his new approaches to harmony\, melody and rhythm; and Chopin tells expansive stories in new and distinctive forms across the vast range of piano writing that he developed.” \n  \nSpiller retired from teaching at Cal Poly in 2023. \n  \nTickets are $20 for the public\, and $10 for students. Proceeds will benefit the Music Department Scholarship Fund. Event parking is sponsored by the PAC. Tickets are available at the Cal Poly Ticket Office between noon and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. To order by phone\, call 805-SLO-4TIX (805-756-4849). \n  \nThe concert is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Music Department and College of Liberal Arts. For more information\, call the Music Department at 805-756-2406 or visit its calendar website.

SUMMARY:Spokes: Development Directors Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:Spokes roundtables are facilitated\, peer networking and problem-solving opportunities held monthly especially for Spokes members. At the start of the roundtable\, participants introduce themselves and share some good news or something that’s “keeping them up at night.” They may also offer a “spotlight topic” for consideration during the meetings \nA hallmark of the roundtables is confidentiality. The explicit norm is “what’s said in the roundtable stays in the roundtable.” This encourages mutual support and a candid exchange of ideas.

SUMMARY:January Membership Mixer
DESCRIPTION:Every month SLO Chamber members gather after hours to catch up\, meet new members\, do a bit of networking and get an inside glance at a local business. \nMembership Mixers happen on the third Wednesday of every month and provide an opportunity for members to get to know each other and share business contacts all in the friendly confines of a member business. \nA benefit to all Chamber members\, these networking events provide the opportunity for the host to showcase their digs\, show off what they do and maybe even boast a little about the services they offer. \nAll members are welcome to invite a non-member as a one-time guest. The guest will be contacted at a later date about the benefits of a membership. \nPlease see Mixer Guidelines for potential hosts.

SUMMARY:Spokes: Board President/Chair Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:Spokes roundtables are facilitated\, peer networking and problem-solving opportunities. At the start of the roundtable\, participants introduce themselves and share some good news and/or something that’s “keeping them up at night.” They may also offer a “spotlight topic” for discussion during the course of the 60 minute session. \nA hallmark of the roundtables is confidentiality. The explicit norm is “what’s said in the roundtable stays in the roundtable.” This encourages mutual support and a candid exchange of ideas. As we meet in Zoom\, we request that participants display their name and organization and have their video on.
