DESCRIPTION:CHAMBER Series: Bach and the Russians \nRussian composer Sofia Gubaidulina was once blacklisted by the Soviet government. Like her mentor Shostakovich\, she drew great inspiration from Bach\,and her haunting Meditation is based on the Bach Cantata When in the hour of utmost need. Similarly\, Felix Mendelssohn almost single-handedly revived interest in Bach’s music in the 19th century. An avid collector of Bach manuscripts\, he gave the first performance since Bach’s death of St. Matthew’s Passion at the age of 20. Written for the Russian Musical Society Competition\, the Sextet was one of Rimsky-Korsakov’s few pieces of chamber music. • SOFIA GUBAIDULINA – Meditation on the Bach Chorale “Vor deinen Thron tret ich hiermit (BWV 668)” • MENDELSSOHN – String Quartet in A minor\, op. 13 • RIMSKY-KORSAKOV – Sextet in A major
