SUMMARY:Climate Action Planning Conference
DESCRIPTION:Cal Poly’s City & Regional Planning Department\, in partnership with the Governor’s Office of Planning and Research (OPR)\, will host the second California Climate Action Planning Conference on Thursday and Friday\, Aug. 13-14. \nIn the last few years there have been many changes in the field\, including the new 2030 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions targets\, advances in regional and local climate planning\, updated protocols and guidance\, more attention to climate adaptation and resilience\, a major drought\, and more. The conference will feature leaders in the field and in-depth focus on GHG emissions reduction and climate adaptation at the local and regional level. \n“California is a national and international leader in acting on climate change\,” said Michael Boswell\, professor of city and regional planning and the conference organizer. “By bringing experts from around the state to share knowledge\, we are enhancing California’s ability to achieve its ambitious goals for climate change\, and we are defining the leading edge for local and global action.” \nThe keynote speaker will be Santa Barbara County Supervisor Salud Carbajal. “Climate change is the fundamental policy challenge facing communities across our state and nation and even internationally\,” said Carbajal. \nCarbajal has promoted environmental stewardship and sustainability by working to establish a waste-to-energy facility; reducing the county’s use of pesticides through its Integrated Pest Management Program; establishing an energy efficiency financing district; and serving on the National Association of Counties’ Energy\, Environment and Land Use Committee. He was appointed by President Obama to serve on the State\, Local and Tribal Leaders Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience. Carbajal holds a master’s degree in organizational management from the Fielding University and served eight years in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve\, including active duty service during the 1991 Gulf War. \nThe 2013 conference was held at Cal Poly and attracted more than 200 professionals from around the state. \nEvent sponsors include Michael Baker International\, PG&E\, Southern California Gas Company\, San Luis Obispo County Energy Watch\, Fehr & Peers\, and Ascent Environmental. \nFor more information visit the conference webpage at planning.calpoly.edu/CCAPC. \nFollow the conference on Twitter at #CCAPC.
