SUMMARY:Gallery at Marina Square Presents Featured Artist Virginia Mack
DESCRIPTION:Virginia Mack is a native Californian. She has been exploring and savoring the wild lands of the state throughout her life. She has been living on the Central Coast for 10 years. She is a part-time instructor at both Allan Hancock College and Cuesta College in the fine arts departments. \nVirginia has spent endless hours exploring the back roads of San Luis Obispo County seeking those bits of landscape that are visually stimulating. Virginia works primarily in watercolors and mixed media and is a colorist at heart. She builds most of her pieces in a wet-on-wet process (wet watercolor paints on wet watercolor paper) resolving the pieces as the paper slowly dries. She creates the forms with rich colors that she plays off against contrasting colors thereby subduing them while preserving their presence in layers of color. She often mixes the watercolor process with work using colored pencils\, pastel\, charcoal\, and pencil.

SUMMARY:Art After Dark
DESCRIPTION:Every first Friday\, hundreds of visitors converge on downtown SLO to see new art exhibits and add to their growing collections. With dozens of galleries and non-traditional exhibit spaces\, it’s SLO’s favorite night of the month to celebrate art for free! Though many shops are open earlier\, Art After Dark officially starts at 6pm and runs to 9pm. \nOn a typical Art After Dark\, over 20 galleries and non-traditional art venues (think restaurants\, boutiques\, and salons) spotlight the best of established and emerging local artists. They sometimes also feature the works of nationally and internationally acclaimed artists. Expect sore feet and creative juices to be flowing from 6 to 9pm on the first Friday of the month.

Terrence Spiller will give a benefit recital at 8 p.m. Friday\, Jan. 8\, in the Spanos Theatre on campus.\nSpiller’s program will start with two sonatas by Ludwig van Beethoven: the Sonata in F Major\, Op. 10 No. 2\, followed by the Sonata in D major\, Op. 28\, also known as “The Pastorale.”\nThe second half of the program will begin with Francis Poulenc’s “Les Soirées de Nazelles” and will conclude with five préludes from Sergei Rachmaninov’s Préludes Op. 23 and Op. 32.\nTickets are $9 for students and $12 for the public. Proceeds will benefit the Cal Poly Music Department Scholarship Fund.\nPricing includes all Performing Arts Center fees\, and event parking is sponsored by the PAC. Tickets are sold at the Cal Poly Ticket Office between noon and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. To order by phone\, call SLO-4TIX (756-4849).
