SUMMARY:Gallery at Marina Square Presents GARY FAIR
DESCRIPTION:Featured Artist:\nGARY FAIR \nType of Art:\nOIL \nShow title:\nOil Paintings by Gary Fair \nExhibition Dates:\nFEBRUARY 1 Through FEBRUARY 28\, 2016 \nOpening Reception:\nFRIDAY\, FEBRUARY 12TH from 5pm to 8pm \nWhere:\nGALLERY AT MARINA SQUARE\, 601 EMBARCADERO\, SUITE 10\, MORRO BAY\, CA 93442 \nContact:\n805-772-1068 \nHow Much:\nFREE \nArtist Statement:\nGrowing up in northern California\, and seeing sailboats on San Francisco Bay\, formed for Gary an indelible sense of wonder in the power of the wind. Being self taught requires Gary to work harder at seeing\, and capturing the image he feels. His work comes from his pure love for the light and shadow\, and the use of real color\, seen in and throughout where we live. Self taught artists paint from within\, first\, without instruction or the confines of rules and structures imposed by outside ideas and techniques. Their art is a part of them and involves a freedom that cannot be taught\, but can only be experienced. With Gary’s art\, one experiences his expression of moment and image.\nIn Gary’s words: “Through my paintings\, I try to capture the pleasure it is to live today\, here and now. Everything around us\, whether it’s sailing on the bay\, or viewing a flower garden\, you can be there through my art.”

SUMMARY:Change the Status Quo
DESCRIPTION:Change the Status Quo (CSQ) is an annual social justice conference hosted by the Center for Service in Action and Student Community Services every winter. The conference aims to challenge social norms to make lasting changes in our community and around the world. The mission of CSQ is to empower students to challenge stereotypes\, demand solutions\, and use education to make a lasting change. CSQ features over 20 workshops on a variety of issues presented by Cal Poly faculty\, community members\, non-profits\, and Cal Poly students. The conference attempts to empower participants to make a difference in the world by taking small actions towards issues that they are passionate about. Simple acts such as volunteering once a week or simply being kind to one another\, when added together\, can make a huge difference. By deciding to take action in causes that we are passionate about\, we can “Change the Status Quo.” \nPlease contact serviceinaction@calpoly.edu with any questions or inquiries.

SUMMARY:Chinese Lunar New Year at the SLO Railroad Museum
DESCRIPTION:Phil Tillman\, local history buff\, will be giving a talk on how so many Chinese people came to be here\, what they did while they lived in the Central Coast area\, and why so many left. There is no group more connected with railroad construction in the West\, and the story of Chinese in San Luis Obispo is deep and widespread. Join us on Saturday\, February 20th at 10 am. This group is enthusiastic and professional and this will be a highlight of our Chinese New Year celebration.
