SUMMARY:Flo Bartell: Bloodlines
DESCRIPTION:During the process of creating\, artists often unearth stories from their memories. A testament to the many facets of personal family history\, Bloodlines is an exhibition of encaustic artworks by Flo Bartell on view at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art McMeen Gallery from December 2 – January 29\, 2017. A public opening of the exhibition will take place on Saturday\, December 3 from 3–5 PM. Bartell will also give an ARTalk and exhibition tour at SLOMA on Saturday\, December 11 from 2–3 PM. SLOMA ARTalks are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Watercolor Artist Virginia Mack Exihibit
DESCRIPTION:Virginia Mack is a native Californian. She has been exploring and savoring the wild lands of the state throughout her life. She has been living on the Central Coast for 15 years. She is a part-time instructor at Cuesta College in the fine arts departments. \nVirginia works primarily in watercolors and mixed media and is a colorist at heart. She builds most of her pieces in a wet-on-wet process (wet watercolor paints on wet watercolor paper) resolving the pieces as the paper slowly dries. She creates the forms with rich colors that she plays off against contrasting colors thereby subduing them while preserving their presence in layers of color. She often mixes the watercolor process with work using colored pencils\, pastel\, charcoal\, and pencil. \nVirginia received her education in fine arts at the University of California\, Berkeley. SUMMARY:Film Night at the SLOMA: "The First 70: California's State Parks Under Threat"
DESCRIPTION:In May 2011\, the State of California announced plans to close one quarter of its 278 parks. The closure list included thousands of acres of park land\, recreation areas\, wildlife reserves\, and half of the state’s historic parks\, including our local Morro Strand State Beach. Upon learning that the state would save merely $22 million with these closures—while undermining local economies—three young filmmakers set out to visit the 70 parks that were doomed to close. Along the 3\,000 mile trek\, they capture both the majesty of the state’s parks and the outrage of local community members\, park rangers\, and environmental activists who are confounded by the State’s financial logic\, yet determined to keep these wondrous expanses of beauty open to the public. The First 70 is an awe-inspiring journey through California’s historic and natural treasures that highlights the ongoing fight to keep them open for future generations.\nThe film will be introduced by the Central Coast State Parks Association.  \nThis film is shown in conjunction with Intersecting California’s State Parks: Paintings by Leslie Love Stone\, on view in the Gray Wing through January 29\, 2017. \nSuggested donation: $5 members\, $7 nonmembers includes complimentary beverage.  \nThe San Luis Obispo Museum of Art recognizes that film is a visual art form and is delighted to bring you a series of outstanding movies inspired by our current exhibitions. Films screen the third Monday of each month at 7 PM.
