DESCRIPTION:BRENT DICKINSON: BABBLING OBJECTS:\nAN INDOOR EARTH WORK \nNovember 8 – December 5\, 2018\nOpening Reception: November 8\, 2018 at 4:30pm to 7:30pm\nArtist Talk in room 6304 at 5:30pm\n\nBrent Everett Dickinson is a multi-disciplinary conceptual artist and writer based in Los Angeles.  He has presented exhibitions\, performances and screenings of his work around the US\, Canada and Europe including the Essl Museum\, Vienna; Socrates Sculpture Park\, NYC; and the Cornerstone Music Festival\, Chicago. \nIn 2017\, Dickinson founded the Marcel Maus Hermeneutical Think Tank which operates as a Deleuzean machine\, working to interrupt\, antagonize and decontextualize Dickinson’s solo work. \nDickinson’s work utilizes a radical entanglement of Christian theology\, critical theory\, and experimental comedy to explore properties and structures of meaning formation. The annual production features the timeless classic A Christmas Carol\, a hilarious fractured fairytale\, and a vaudeville revue featuring the song\, dance\, and comedy of the season. Whether you’ve been naughty or nice\, The Holiday Extravaganza is a perfect for any holiday wish list.  \n  \nThe show opens with a one-act version of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol\, directed by Melodrama Artistic Director Dan Schultz. Miserly Ebenezer Scrooge (Billy Breed)\, who thinks Christmas is a “humbug\,” is visited by spirits who teach him the true meaning of the holiday season. These magical encounters lead to heart-warming scenes of redemption\, punctuated with songs and laughter. \n  \nFollowing A Christmas Carol is the comedic operetta Rapunzel\, or Hair Today\, Gone Tomorrow by Eric Hoit and Marian Partee. This hysterical musical lark\, directed by Hoit\, follows Rapunzel (Annali Fuchs Wackowski) and a wacky cast of characters as they let their hair down. They sing classical music with fractured-fairy tale lyrics in a 30-minute production sure to delight one and all. \n  \nThe evening concludes with the company’s traditional vaudeville revue. This year’s show is based on children’s letters to Santa Claus. Enjoy musical numbers like the ever-popular “Reindeer Rap\,” the famous Water Glass Orchestra\, and Five Golden Rings Chorale. Musical direction and accompaniment for The Holiday Extravaganza is provided by Mike Wilkins with choreography by Sydni Abenido and Zach Johnson.  \n  \nMany performances are added to the Melodrama’s regular schedule to accommodate demand for this Central Coast favorite. DESCRIPTION:Cal Poly Choirs: Holiday Kaleidoscope\nSaturday\, Dec. 1\, 2018\n3 p.m.\, Harold J. Miossi Hall\, Performing Arts Center \n \nAn annual holiday tradition\, this concert is a collaborative celebration of choral music in the greater San Luis Obispo area! Along with all three Cal Poly Choirs\, the performance will feature three local high school choirs: Cabrillo (Lompoc)\, Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo. The choirs will each perform their own repertoire\, as well as join together with the Cal Poly Brass Ensemble to perform Daniel Pinkham’s festive “Christmas Cantata.” Audience members will have a chance to experience the beauty of the season through traditional holiday favorites\, modern masterworks and participatory singing of carols. \nTickets ($12 and $14 general\, $9 and $12 students)

DESCRIPTION:Our holiday concert fills the air with plenty of secular variety to complement traditional holiday fare. Our featured soloist is concert master Byron Mele\, performing the second movement of David Maslanka’s Concerto for Clarinet and Wind Ensemble. “Dance’s” bubbling and sometimes urgent energy climaxes in a beautiful hymnal passage.\nThe holiday program also offers Bach’s Jesu\, Joy of Man’s Desiring\, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 arranged for chamber winds\, Maslanka’s Mother Earth Fanfare and David Holsinger’s poignant On a Hymnsong of Phillip Bliss\, based on the gentle hymn It is Well with My Soul. We complete our holiday concert with traditional holiday favorites plus the hearty Minor Alterations\, a comic twist on traditional Christmas carols that will bring a smile to your face and laughter to your heart! And don’t forget the holiday sing-along.

SUMMARY:Arab Music Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, Dec. 1\, 2018\n8 p.m.\, Spanos Theatre \nTickets ($14 general\, $9 students) \n \nFeaturing diverse programs of classic and contemporary music and dance\, the Arab Music Ensemble will give three main contrasting shows during the concert season. While focusing on the Eastern Mediterranean\, the programs will also feature selections from historically interconnected cultures of the larger region. \nThe instrumental and vocal repertoire will include a variety of composed and improvisational genres that stem from the Middle Ages to the present. Also on the programs will be examples from among the oldest continuously performed art-music genres in the world and the most popular songs in the region. \nCritically acclaimed guest artists will join the students in the ensemble\, bringing their professional skill and virtuosity to the performances and to the educational experience. Colorfully costumed dancers will also join the ensemble to put a variety of selections into graceful motion. \n
