SUMMARY:Cal Poly to Present Bach Week Jan. 22-26
DESCRIPTION:— The Cal Poly Music Department will present Bach Week from Tuesday through Saturday\, Jan. 22-26\, with presentations and performances on campus and in Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. \n  \nBach Week features a range of events\, including a chamber music performance on period instruments\, collaborative performances of large vocal and instrumental works by students and professionals\, two master classes\, and a guest lecture or “Akademie.” The free demonstrations and lectures provide additional context for the performances. New this year is a cello chamber concert and an expansion of the Friday chamber concert. \nThe first four events will take place on campus: \n\nAt 6 p.m. Jan. 22\, an Akademie lecture titled “Baroque Dance and the Cello Suite” will be presented by Catherine Turocy in the Performing Arts Center (PAC) Pavilion. A leading choreographer\, reconstructor and stage director in 17th and 18th century period performance\, Turocy will explore the relationship between Baroque dance forms and the cello suites of J.S. Bach with discussion\, examples\, dance instruction and audience participation. Barbara Spencer will play examples from Bach’s second cello suite to help bring the discussion to life.\nAt 7:30 p.m. Jan. 22\, in the PAC Pavilion is a new Bach Week event: a chamber concert by cellists Spencer\, Jeanne Shumway and Hilary Clark. They are beginning a two-year cycle of J.S. Bach’s cello suites. Each will perform one of these monuments of the solo cello literature. All the cellists perform in major ensembles on the Central Coast. Spencer and Shumway teach cello at Cal Poly.\nAt 11:10 a.m. Jan. 24\, the guest artists of Mensa Sonora California will coach Cal Poly students in instrumental repertoire from the Baroque era\, with a focus on historically informed performance. The class will take place in Room 218 of the Davidson Music Center (No. 45).\nAt 3:10 p.m. Jan. 24\, guest artist Matthew Goinz\, a longtime member of the world-famous men’s ensemble Cantus\, will coach several Cal Poly voice students in repertoire from the Baroque era. The class will take place in Room 218 of the Davidson Music Center (No. 45).\n\nThe final three events will take place in Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa at 751 Palm St. in downtown San Luis Obispo: \n\nAt 7 p.m. Jan. 25\, Bach Week Directors David Arrivée and Scott Glysson will give a free pre-concert talk on the Friday and Saturday concerts.\nAt 8 p.m. Jan. 25\, will be a chamber concert titled “Music Royal and Divine.” This year\, the concert will expand to include chamber vocal works in addition to instrumental music performed by the world-class period instrument ensemble Mensa Sonora California. Three works for solo voice and small instrument ensemble will also be performed. Two works by Handel\, “Gloria in Excelsis Deo” and “Salve Regina\,” will be performed by guest artists\, sopranos Cait Frizzell and Katya Gruzglina\, respectively. Gruzglina is a graduate of the Juilliard School and an active performer with Chamber Music Silicon Valley and Orange County Opera. Frizzell is a graduate of the Royal College of Music and a member of the Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble Seraphic Fire. Guest baritone Goinz will perform the cantata “Thétis” by French baroque composer Jean-Phillipe Rameau. The concert will also include “L’impériale” by François Couperin\, performed by Mensa Sonora California: Anthony Martin\, violin; David Wilson\, violin; John Dornenburg\, viola da gamba; and Charles Sherman\, harpsichord. University organist Paul Woodring will play organ.\nAt 8 p.m. Jan. 26\, the week concludes with “Bach in the Mission IX: Music for the King.” Members of Cal Poly’s Chamber Choir\, Symphony and faculty join with guest artists to perform the music of J.S. Bach and his contemporaries. The performance will include Bach’s “Christen\, ätzet diesen Tag\,” BWV 63; selections from Purcell’s “The Fairy Queen” and Handel’s “Dettingen Te Deum.”\n\nBach Week sprang from Bach in the Mission\, an annual collaborative concert established in 2011 that gives Cal Poly student musicians the opportunity to rehearse and perform the vocal and instrumental music of Johann Sebastian Bach with faculty members and local professionals. It expanded into a weeklong event in 2015. \n  \nAdmission to the campus events is free\, though parking will be enforced. For more information on visitor parking on campus\, visit Cal Poly’s Transportation and Parking Services website. \n  \nTickets for the concerts in the mission are $15 for the public and $10 for students. Discounts\, offered when tickets to both mission concerts are purchased together\, are $25 for the public\, and $15 for students. Tickets are sold at the Cal Poly Ticket Office between noon and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. To order by phone\, call 805-SLO-4TIX (805-756-4849). Tickets can also be purchased at the door the nights of the concerts. \n  \nThe events are sponsored by Cal Poly’s College of Liberal Arts\, Music Department\, Instructionally Related Activities program and Tevis Fund for Visiting Artists. Additional support is provided by the Handler and Steiner Family Fund. For more information\, visit the Bach Week website or call the Music Department at 805-756-2406. \nLinks \n\nBach Week: bachweek.calpoly.edu\nCal Poly Ticket Office: tickets.calpoly.edu\nCal Poly Transportation and Parking Services: parking.calpoly.edu/parkingoncampus/visitingthecampus/\nDavidson Music Center (No. 45): maps.calpoly.edu/place/bldg-045-0\nMission San Luis Obispo: missionsanluisobispo.org/contact-us/\nPerforming Arts Center (No. 6): maps.calpoly.edu/place/bldg-006-0

SUMMARY:Steel Magnolia's at the Great American Melodrama
DESCRIPTION:One of the country’s most popular plays is set to premier at the Great American Melodrama in Oceano: Robert Harling’s Steel Magnolias. This charming comedy about the bonds of friendship spawned the popular Oscar-nominated film version and follows the same story. “It’s a delightful play to open our season with. It’s so funny\, so well-written\, and the best actors wanted to work on the project\,” said Melodrama Artistic Director Dan Schultz. \nSet in Louisiana in the 1980’s\, Steel Magnolias is the tale of six Southern women who gather under the hair dryers of their local salon to gossip\, laugh\, and share stories and insults. Full of big characters\, big hair\, and big laughs\, the events turn serious when the group shares a tragic loss. You’ll fall in love with these women who are “delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel.” Directed by Robyne Parrish\, and featuring Suzy Newman (M’Lynn)\, Patty Thayer (Clairee)\, Katie Worley Beck (Annelle)\, Eleise Moore (Truvy)\, Bonner Church (Ouiser) and Rebecca Tucker (Shelby)\, the show is sure to delight audiences from across the Central Coast. \nFollowing each performance of Steel Magnolias is the brand new vaudeville revue\, The Queens of Comedy. It’s a hilarious tribute to your favorite comediennes from the last 100 years. Featuring song\, dance\, and comedy\, the Queens of Comedy is a perfect capper to an evening of incredible live theatre. It’s directed by Sarah Wussow and features choreography by Katie Fuchs Wackowski. \nThese shows play January 24 – March 10. Performances are Thursday and Fridays at 7 pm\, Saturdays at 3 and 7 pm\, and Sundays at 6 pm. The Melodrama’s in-house snack bar features great food and drinks served before the show and during intermissions. Tickets are $23 to $30\, with discounts available for groups\, seniors\, students\, active military\, and children. For more information and to purchase tickets\, call the Melodrama Box Office\, at 805-489-2499\, or visit www.americanmelodrama.com. The Great American Melodrama is located on Highway 1 in Oceano\, just three miles south of Pismo Beach. Come see they’re brand new box office building across from the theatre\, you can’t miss it.  The Melodrama has been providing professional family entertainment on the Central Coast since 1975.

SUMMARY:Cal Poly Orchesis Dance Company to Present ‘Tabula Rasa’
DESCRIPTION:Tabula Rasa – Orchesis Dance Concert\nFriday\, January 18\, 2019 at 8:00pm\nSaturday\, January 19\, 2019 at 2:00pm & 8:00pm\nThursday\, January 24\, 2019 at 8:00pm\nFriday\, January 25\, 2019 at 8:00pm\nSaturday\, January 26\, 2019 at 8:00pm\n  \nThe Cal Poly Theatre and Dance Department will present the Orchesis Dance Company’s 49th annual concert “Tabula Rasa\,” Friday and Saturday\, Jan. 18-19\, and Thursday through Saturday\, Jan. 24-26\, in the Spanos Theatre on campus. Performances will begin at 8 p.m. on all days\, with a matinee scheduled at 2 p.m. Jan. 19. \n  \n“Tabula Rasa\,” titled after a Latin phrase that is often translated as “blank slate\,” will transform the Spanos Theatre stage into an open space. This year’s concert is conceived and directed by Associate Professor Christy McNeil Chand and assisted by Professor Diana Stanton and faculty member Michelle Walter. \n  \n“No drapes will mask the backstage areas; we’re cleaning the stage slate and broadening our performance space beyond the proscenium into the area known usually as backstage\,” Chand said. \n  \nProduction collaborators include lighting designer Clint Bryson\, several students from the liberal arts and engineering studies program under the direction of Professor David Gillette\, and guest choreographers. \n  \nInternationally-renowned choreographer David Dorfman and his wife\, Lisa Race\, created the closing work of the performance featuring all 29 company dancers. Texas Woman’s University Professor Matthew Henley created a modern piece for six dancers that explores what traces are left behind after shape and moments emerge then dissolve. Stanton focused on Carl Jung’s theory of neurosis and the shadow archetype to create her modern dance for 10 dancers. Walter’s ballet features 11 dancers on pointe as part of the Advanced Ballet Repertory course. In Chand’s contemporary jazz work\, the dancers represent robots trying to express three different human emotions. The work of local guest artist Horacio Heredia will also be featured. \n  \nTruly embracing Cal Poly’s motto of Learn by Doing\, five student choreographers will present choreography they created within the Orchesis class process. Aerospace engineering major Elizabeth Hawkinson\, biochemistry majors Maile Crowder and Simone Bernsten\, biology major Amy Penner\, and architecture major Emily Chung have all embraced the theme utilizing ideas such as knowledge learned through travel\, perception of the tap dance form\, and shedding what has been learned to allow new knowledge to penetrate the body\, mind and soul. \n  \nTickets for “Tabula Rasa” are $20 for the public and $12 for students\, seniors and children. They can be bought at the Performing Arts Center Ticket Office between noon and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. To order by phone\, call 805-SLO-4TIX (805-756-4849). Purchase online at pacslo.org. \n  \nIn addition to the Theatre and Dance Department\, the performance is sponsored by Cal Poly’s College of Liberal Arts and the Instructionally Related Activities program. \n  \nLinks \n– Cal Poly Orchesis Dance Company: theatredance.calpoly.edu/orchesis \n– Cal Poly Theatre and Dance Department: theatredance.calpoly.edu/ \n– Cal Poly Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies Program: laes.calpoly.edu \n– David Dorfman Dance: www.daviddorfmandance.org
