SUMMARY:Steel Magnolia's at the Great American Melodrama
DESCRIPTION:One of the country’s most popular plays is set to premier at the Great American Melodrama in Oceano: Robert Harling’s Steel Magnolias. This charming comedy about the bonds of friendship spawned the popular Oscar-nominated film version and follows the same story. “It’s a delightful play to open our season with. It’s so funny\, so well-written\, and the best actors wanted to work on the project\,” said Melodrama Artistic Director Dan Schultz. \nSet in Louisiana in the 1980’s\, Steel Magnolias is the tale of six Southern women who gather under the hair dryers of their local salon to gossip\, laugh\, and share stories and insults. Full of big characters\, big hair\, and big laughs\, the events turn serious when the group shares a tragic loss. You’ll fall in love with these women who are “delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel.” Directed by Robyne Parrish\, and featuring Suzy Newman (M’Lynn)\, Patty Thayer (Clairee)\, Katie Worley Beck (Annelle)\, Eleise Moore (Truvy)\, Bonner Church (Ouiser) and Rebecca Tucker (Shelby)\, the show is sure to delight audiences from across the Central Coast. \nFollowing each performance of Steel Magnolias is the brand new vaudeville revue\, The Queens of Comedy. It’s a hilarious tribute to your favorite comediennes from the last 100 years. Featuring song\, dance\, and comedy\, the Queens of Comedy is a perfect capper to an evening of incredible live theatre. It’s directed by Sarah Wussow and features choreography by Katie Fuchs Wackowski. \nThese shows play January 24 – March 10. Performances are Thursday and Fridays at 7 pm\, Saturdays at 3 and 7 pm\, and Sundays at 6 pm. The Melodrama’s in-house snack bar features great food and drinks served before the show and during intermissions. Tickets are $23 to $30\, with discounts available for groups\, seniors\, students\, active military\, and children. For more information and to purchase tickets\, call the Melodrama Box Office\, at 805-489-2499\, or visit www.americanmelodrama.com. The Great American Melodrama is located on Highway 1 in Oceano\, just three miles south of Pismo Beach. Come see they’re brand new box office building across from the theatre\, you can’t miss it.  The Melodrama has been providing professional family entertainment on the Central Coast since 1975.

SUMMARY:‘And Then They Came for Us’ Documentary to Screen at Cal Poly
DESCRIPTION:The Cal Poly English Department and College of Liberal Arts will host a screening of the award-winning documentary “And Then They Came for Us” from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday\, Feb. 20\, in Room 2 in the Advanced Technology Laboratories (No. 7) on campus. \nIn 1941 President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066\, paving the way to the profound violation of constitutional rights that resulted in the forced incarceration of 120\,000 Japanese-Americans. \n“And Then They Came for Us” features activist\, producer\, and Sacramento State Professor Emeritus Satsuki Ina\, Ph.D.; actor and activist George Takei; and others who were incarcerated\, as well as newly rediscovered photographs by Dorothea Lange. “[Internment] was a failure of American democracy\, and yet because most Americans are not aware of that dark chapter of American history\, it’s about to be repeated\,” Takei said. The documentary retells the difficult story and follows Japanese-American activists as they speak out against the Muslim registry and travel ban. \nIna\, who is featured in the film and will attend the screening\, was born in the Tule Lake concentration camp during World War II. She is professor emeritus in the School of Education at Sacramento State and currently has a private psychotherapy practice in Oakland\, California\, where she specializes in the treatment of community-based\, historical trauma. She has produced two award-winning PBS documentary films on the subject of the Japanese-American incarceration\, “Children of the Camps” and “From a Silk Cocoon.” \nThe screening is free and open to the public. Ina will answer questions from the audience following the screening. Tickets are not required\, and seating is open. \nLinks \nCal Poly English Department: https://english.calpoly.edu \nCal Poly College of Liberal Arts: https://cla.calpoly.edu \n“And Then They Came For Us”: https://www.thentheycamedoc.com \nSatsuki Ina: http://satsukiina.com

SUMMARY:Fremont Theater Presents: NONAME - ROOM25
DESCRIPTION:Noname will be live in downtown SLO on Wednesday\, February 20\, 2019! \nSpecial Local Pre-Sale Wednesday\, 10.31 10:00 AM – Thursday\, 11.1 10:00 PM PW: Fremont SLO \nTickets On-Sale Friday\, 11.2 at 10:00 AM. \n♦ SHOW INFORMATION ♦ \nDoor Time- 8:00 PM\nShow Time- 9:00 PM\n16+ \n♦ TICKET OUTLET ♦ \nBoo Boo Records\n978 Monterey St • SLO\nMon-Wed 10-8\, Thurs-Sat 10-9\, Sun 11-6 \n♦ BAND INFORMATION ♦ \nNoname (born Fatimah Warner) is an American artist from Chicago\, Illinois\, who blurs the lines of poetry and rap through the music she creates. \nNoname grew up in Bronzeville\, a historic neighborhood on the southside of Chicago that famously attracted accomplished black artists and intellectuals of all types. Noname first discovered her love for words while taking a creative writing class as a sophmore in highschool. \nShe became enamored with poetry and spoken word- pouring over Def Poetry Jam clips on YouTube and attending open mics around the city. Noname regularly attended and performed at an open mic at Harold Washington Library- YouMedia’s Lyricist Loft. \nAfter sessions at YouMedia\, Noname would participate in cyphers and started getting into freestyling. When she was just a senior in highschool\, she placed third in “Louder Than A Bomb”\, a poetry competition with 120 Chicago high schools in participation. She remained connected with the artists she met at YouMedia and in 2013\, her verse on Chance the Rapper’s “Lost” attracted the beginning of her large fan base\, most of whom have been following her every move since. \nOn July 31st Noname released her debut project entitled Telefone which was 3 years in the making and highly anticipated by fans and media alike. Instantly the project gained critical acclaim with a rave review by Pitchfork and landing her praise from major outlets like Rolling Stones\, Complex and Dazed & Confused. Noname has been hailed by The FADER\, Complex\, and Rolling Stone as one of the most exciting and important new artists of 2016. \nThanks to Telefone’s success\, Noname played some shows in support of Ms. Lauryn Hill\, who hand-picked Noname to open for her on tour. When first approaching the project\, Noname set out to emulate the feeling of talking on the phone with someone for the first time. She describes Telefone as “an introductory conversation with someone you’re interested in”. But as Noname continued to work on the tape\, it also transitioned a bit into mortality: the idea of life and death and the duality between those two things \nRenaissance Vocalist Elton (+-) is an artist\, writer and producer from “The Valley” referring to Fox River Valley a west Chicago Suburb. \nElton began his musical journey with the Art of Cool\, a multi-instrumentation jazz/hip hop group that included longtime collaborator & friend Phoelix. This laid the groundwork for MDMC where we first see Elton’s lyrical prowess on display. After moving to Chicago & struggling to find his place both internally and artistically. Elton utilized his collaborative skills to team up with Chicago producers The Burns Twin’s & Bedows for their EP’s; Sun Shower & Side Eye. His growth during this time resulted in the completion of his Solo Project – Elevated. Released in August 2018. \nReaching from his past experiences\, and current realities. Elevated takes you on a whirlwind of intrinsic instrumentation\, while Elton’s delivery paints a portrait with poetic melodies\, wrapped in bedroom soul. \n
