SUMMARY:Steel Magnolia's at the Great American Melodrama
DESCRIPTION:One of the country’s most popular plays is set to premier at the Great American Melodrama in Oceano: Robert Harling’s Steel Magnolias. This charming comedy about the bonds of friendship spawned the popular Oscar-nominated film version and follows the same story. “It’s a delightful play to open our season with. It’s so funny\, so well-written\, and the best actors wanted to work on the project\,” said Melodrama Artistic Director Dan Schultz. \nSet in Louisiana in the 1980’s\, Steel Magnolias is the tale of six Southern women who gather under the hair dryers of their local salon to gossip\, laugh\, and share stories and insults. Full of big characters\, big hair\, and big laughs\, the events turn serious when the group shares a tragic loss. You’ll fall in love with these women who are “delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel.” Directed by Robyne Parrish\, and featuring Suzy Newman (M’Lynn)\, Patty Thayer (Clairee)\, Katie Worley Beck (Annelle)\, Eleise Moore (Truvy)\, Bonner Church (Ouiser) and Rebecca Tucker (Shelby)\, the show is sure to delight audiences from across the Central Coast. \nFollowing each performance of Steel Magnolias is the brand new vaudeville revue\, The Queens of Comedy. It’s a hilarious tribute to your favorite comediennes from the last 100 years. Featuring song\, dance\, and comedy\, the Queens of Comedy is a perfect capper to an evening of incredible live theatre. It’s directed by Sarah Wussow and features choreography by Katie Fuchs Wackowski. \nThese shows play January 24 – March 10. Performances are Thursday and Fridays at 7 pm\, Saturdays at 3 and 7 pm\, and Sundays at 6 pm. The Melodrama’s in-house snack bar features great food and drinks served before the show and during intermissions. Tickets are $23 to $30\, with discounts available for groups\, seniors\, students\, active military\, and children. For more information and to purchase tickets\, call the Melodrama Box Office\, at 805-489-2499\, or visit www.americanmelodrama.com. The Great American Melodrama is located on Highway 1 in Oceano\, just three miles south of Pismo Beach. Come see they’re brand new box office building across from the theatre\, you can’t miss it.  The Melodrama has been providing professional family entertainment on the Central Coast since 1975.

SUMMARY:Festival Mozaic Partners with Steinway for WinterMezzo Weekend
DESCRIPTION:For decades\, Steinway & Sons has cultivated special relationships with pianists from every genre\, including historic local celebrity Ignacy Jan Paderewski. Pianist Anna Polonsky\, one of the more than 1\,600 Steinway artists\, will be playing in San Luis Obispo at Festival Mozaic’s WinterMezzo weekend\, February 21-24. Festival Mozaic is excited to announce a new partnership with Steinway & Sons\, which results in the loan of a concert grand piano for Polonsky to use for the Festival’s upcoming WinterMezzo weekend. \nAbout being a Steinway artist\, Polonsky states\, “In my performing experience\, no piano but Steinway has been better at answering my musical and technical needs.” \nFestival Mozaic’s WinterMezzo Series runs February 21-24\, 2018 with four days of music\, food\, wine and education. Well-known for its popular summer music festival\, Festival Mozaic brings world-class chamber music performances to scenic San Luis Obispo County\, California\, through the rest of the year with its WinterMezzo series. \nScott Yoo\, the Festival’s Music Director\, curates the WinterMezzo series\, which showcases exceptional artists performing in intimate venues. Yoo will perform as violinist in these programs\, along with featured artists Anna Polonsky and Bion Tsang. Yoo is in residence in San Luis Obispo six weeks each year; he also serves as Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Mexico City Philharmonic and conducts all over the world. Additionally\, Yoo is the host and executive producer of Now Hear This\, a music and travel television program slated to air as part of Great Performances on PBS in Fall 2019. \nAs part of the WinterMezzo series\, Yoo will be giving an encore performance of Bach’s Partita No. 2 for solo violin\, which includes the massive Chaconne. This movement\, often labeled the “Everest” of the solo violin repertoire\, consists of thirty variations on a single theme\, and exceeds the other four movements combined in length. Yoo will also be leading a free master class for local violinists and a school matinee Notable Encounter for K-6 grade classes about the violin\, cello\, and piano. Both free events take place at the Performing Arts Center and are presented in partnership with the PACSLO outreach department. \nPatrons may attend one or two events or choose to take in all of the events for a truly immersive experience. Over the course of the weekend\, the performers will explore four works: \nBACH – Violin Partita No. 2 in D minor\, BWV 1004\nMOZART – Piano Trio (Divertimento) in B-flat major\, K. 254\nBRITTEN – Cello Sonata\, Op. 65\nMENDELSSOHN – Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor\, Op. 49 \nThe WinterMezzo weekend consists of sequential events: beginning with Notable Encounters\, in which the musicians talk about the pieces and perform selections\, and concluding with a traditional concert. The Notable Encounter event that is paired with a special dinner is already sold out. These programs are designed so patrons who attend all events can develop a richer understanding of the works to be heard at the final concert.

SUMMARY:Cal Poly Arab Music Ensemble to Perform Works of Love
DESCRIPTION:The Cal Poly Arab Music Ensemble’s Winter Concert will feature the theme of love at 8 p.m. Saturday\, Feb. 23\, in Harold J. Miossi Hall in the Performing Arts Center’s Christopher Cohan Center. \n“The deep\, passionate love of the works in the concert will be presented in a ‘wasla’ or suite of ‘muwashahat\,’ one of the longest continuously performed genres of high art music in the world\,” said Samuel Shalhoub\, acting director of the ensemble. “The concert will be a celebration of the power of love through music and dance.” \nA special feature of the concert will be the suite titled “Alf Layla Wa Layla” or “A Thousand and One Nights\,” a four-movement composition based on Persian\, Arabic and Indian stories. These stories have been told for centuries and have influenced other great literature in turn\, as in the case of the art songs of the famous Lebanese Rahbani Brothers and musical icon Fairuz. These songs form a suite in the “muwashshah” genre\, which dates to the Middle Ages. \nThe Arab Music Ensemble is a multi-instrumental orchestra and choir with vocal and instrumental soloists. Its membership represents a wide range of majors on campus and professions off campus. The ensemble will be joined on stage by critically acclaimed guest artists: Faisal Zedan\, percussion; Fathi al-Jarrah\, violin; and Elias Lammam\, accordion. \nSan Luis Obispo dance director Jenna Mitchell will lead her dance troupe in original choreography that dialogues with the music. Shalhoub\, a composer\, performer\, lecturer in the Liberal Studies Department and president of the Coast Unified School District board of trustees in Cambria\, is directing the Arab Music Ensemble in its second concert of the 2018-19 season. \nTickets are $12 and $14 for the public\, and $9 and $12 for students. Event parking is sponsored by the PAC. Tickets are available at the Cal Poly Ticket Office between noon and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. To order by phone\, call SLO-4TIX (756-4849). \nThe Music Department offers a 10 percent discount to patrons who buy season tickets to four of its events through the Cal Poly Ticket Office; a 15 percent discount is given on tickets to five or more events. \nThe concert is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Music Department\, College of Liberal Arts and Instructionally Related Activities program. For more information\, call the Music Department at 805-756-2406 or visit its calendar website.
