SUMMARY:Cal Poly’s Succulentopia plant sale
DESCRIPTION:More than 100 varieties of succulents will be available at Cal Poly’s Succulentopia plant sale from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday\, May 10\, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday\, May 11\, at the Horticulture Unit near the Poly Plant Shop. \n  \nMore than 4\,000 plants will be available for purchase. Five students are involved in the student-run project\, which is one of several hands-on experiences offered by the College of Agriculture\, Food and Environmental Sciences’ Horticulture and Crop Science Department. \n  \nStudent succulent manager Karianne Rydberg\, a senior agricultural and environmental plant sciences major who oversaw the student production team\, said the experience gave her greenhouse management skills that she will use in her career after she graduates in June. \n  \n“Succulentopia is the perfect example of a Learn by Doing experience\,” she said. “We have an incredible student succulent crew that handles every aspect of the growing process\, including propagation\, fertilization and pest management. Working on this project was a great supplement to my coursework because it gave me a practical application for the things I have leaned throughout my time at Cal Poly.” \n  \nFour additional agricultural and environmental plant sciences students also assisted with the succulent production: sophomore Boden Cunningham\, senior Kelsea Jones\, sophomore Shannon Kerner and senior Ted Fitzgerald. Lecturer Mike Bush oversees the project. \n  \n“I am simply knocked-out at the quality of our plants\,” Bush said. “The student succulent team has been extremely professional in their production and the results of their efforts could not be better.” \n  \nThe cost of the plants is determined by size: 4-inch pots\, $4.50; 4.5-inch pots\, $5.50; 6-inch succulent garden\, $12.50; 8-inch succulent garden\, $25; and additional large plants priced accordingly. Varieties include Crassula\, Echeveria\, Sedum\, Sedeveria\, Aloe\, Gasteria\, Haworthia\, Kalanchoe\, Graptopetalum\, Graptoveria\, Senecio\, Agave\, Peperomia\, Aeoniums\, Callisia\, Cyanotis\, Adromischus\, Sempervivum\, and Orostachys\, among others.

SUMMARY:Cuesta College Presents Behind the Ides
DESCRIPTION:World Premiere \nA New Play by David Armstrong\nDirected by Joan Marie Hurwit \nFrom the perspective of box office call operators\, this new documentary-style play follows the very real backlash NYC’s The Public Theater received during the summer of 2017. Amidst a charged political climate\, they chose to portray the title character of Julius Caesar as the 45th president which brought on a firestorm of negative callers from around the U.S. This artistic choice sparked a conversation about the role & responsibility of art in politics and how it can be used to navigate deeply rooted divisiveness while maintaining our humanity. \nJoin us as we try to answer the age old and yet still very relevant question: How do we – the public – not let the few dictate the many? Most of the calls and voicemails you’ll hear in this production are verbatim; real people\, real concerns. Warnings include: graphic\, gratuitous language; descriptions of mutilation; swearing – PG 13 rating.

SUMMARY:Cal Poly Chamber Choir to Perform Works in the Requiem Tradition
DESCRIPTION:The 24-member Cal Poly Chamber Choir will present a concert of two requiems at 8 p.m. Saturday\, May 11\, in the historic Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. \nThe concert will open with the spectacular and rarely performed “Musikalische Exequien” (“Funeral Music”) by Heinrich Schütz. Composed in 1636\, the piece is a three-movement monument of the early Baroque Period. Through various scriptural passages and choral texts\, the work was composed for the funeral service of Prince Heinrich II “Posthumous” von Reuss\, a friend and benefactor of Schütz. “Listeners will be treated to a variety of choral textures in this hauntingly beautiful work\,” said Scott Glysson\, Cal Poly director of choral activities. \n“The requiem mass\, or funeral mass\, of the Roman Catholic Church has been a text set to music since the 15th century\,” he added. “As the genre has grown and evolved through the years\, composers have used this model to branch out and incorporate other texts into works intended to remember or honor those who have passed on.” \nThe second half of the concert will feature John Rutter’s “Requiem.” Completed in 1985\, it’s one of Rutter’s most well-known works. It combines elements from the traditional Latin text of the requiem service with modern English. The performance will feature a seven-piece chamber orchestra of Cal Poly students and professional musicians\, including music faculty member Samuel Shalhoub\, lute. \nPaul Woodring is the accompanist for the choirs and will play organ for the concert. \nGlysson\, the concert’s conductor\, will travel to New York with 34 Cal Poly students — including five from the Chamber Choir — to perform at Carnegie Hall on May 25 as part of MidAmerica Productions’ 36th concert season. The Cal Poly Choir members and the Vancouver Bach Choir of British Columbia will collaborate on performances of Joseph Haydn’s “Te Deum (for Empress Marie Therese)” and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Sparrow Mass\,” (Missa brevis in C major). Glysson will conduct the Haydn piece. \nTickets for the May 11 concert are $14 for the public and $9 for students. Tickets are sold at the Cal Poly Ticket Office between noon and 6 p.m. on Monday through Saturday. To order by phone\, call SLO-4TIX (756-4849). Tickets will also be sold at the door the night of the concert. \nA 10 percent discount is given to patrons who buy season tickets to four Music Department events through the Cal Poly Ticket Office; a 15 percent discount is given on tickets to five or more events. \nThe concert is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Music Department\, College of Liberal Arts and Instructionally Related Activities program.
