SUMMARY:Spring Entrepreneurship Forum Featuring Alumnus\, Olympian and Startup Founder Simon Arkell
DESCRIPTION:Cal Poly’s CIE to Host Spring Entrepreneurship Forum Featuring Alumnus\, Olympian and Startup Founder Simon Arkell on May 14 \nKeynote to include discussion on AI and big data; event will also reveal newest class of student entrepreneurs to join CIE’s Summer HotHouse Accelerator program \n  \nThe Cal Poly Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship will host its annual Spring Entrepreneurship Forum on Tuesday\, May 14\, to discuss the ever-increasing role of artificial intelligence in the startup world and announce the student-founded startups selected for the CIE’s summer HotHouse Startup Accelerator program. \nAttendees will learn about the growing importance of embracing and mastering big data and artificial intelligence in the startup world. \nSimon Arkell will break down the intimidating subject of AI and share insights about how it can be leveraged in any startup. Arkell is a two-time pole vault Olympian (Australia) and president and co-founder of Deep Lens\, an artificial intelligence software company providing a deep learning-based digital pathology platform to hospitals worldwide\, \nPrior to Deep Lens\, the Cal Poly alumnus (MBA\, ’94) was founding CEO of Predixion Software Inc.\, a predictive analytics platform software company\, before Greenwave Systems Inc. acquired it in 2016. Predixion\, which was named a visionary for advanced analytics by Gartner Inc.\, had raised more than $46 million from strategic and venture investors including General Electric Co.\, Accenture\, Dell EMC and Draper Fisher Jurvetson. \n“The CIE is proud to help our community stay on the cutting-edge of technology\,” said CIE Executive Director Tod Nelson. “Big data isn’t going away anytime soon\, and this forum is designed to make it feel more accessible.” \nIn addition\, forum attendees will have an opportunity to see and meet budding entrepreneurs at the very start of the entrepreneurial process. Cal Poly student entrepreneurs will unveil their business plans to the community\, marking the start of their 13-week journey in CIE’s summer accelerator program where the students and alumni hone in their business ideas\, work with mentors\, attend weekly workshops and have access to $10\,000 in seed funding to kick-start their businesses. \nDuring the P.E.N. SUMMARY:Cal Poly Presents: UC Berkeley Professor to Give Talk on Gay Shame\, Queer Hate and Direct Action
DESCRIPTION:SAN LUIS OBISPO — UC Berkeley Gender and Women’s Studies faculty member Eric Stanley\, Ph.D.\, will visit Cal Poly on May 14 to give a talk\, “Is Love a Necessary Revolutionary Affect? Gay Shame\, Queer Hate and Direct Action in Silicon Valley.” \nStanley\, who uses the gender-neutral pronouns they/them\, will lead a discussion of Gay Shame\, a queer direct action group based in San Francisco\, and its work confronting the hyper-gentrification of the Bay Area propelled by the tech industry. \nDescribing itself as\, “a virus in the system\,” Gay Shame utilizes its collective “bad attitudes” to “instigate\, irritate\, and agitate to build cultures of devastating resistance.” Stanley argues that the Left’s focus on love as a tool for social revolution can backfire or have unintended consequences — that revolutionary movements focused on love as a tool for social change (at the exclusion of hate and of rage) may actually uphold rather than challenge capitalism and gentrification. \n“The Women’s and Gender Studies Department is incredibly excited to welcome Dr. Stanley to campus\,” said Jane Lehr\, chair of the department. “Earlier this year\, Dr. Cornel West shared with the Cal Poly community that\, ‘Justice is what love looks like in public.’ And we believe that. We really do. \n“But we also know that a lot of us respond to oppression and injustice with rage\, and sometimes with hate\,” Lehr continued. “And when we rage\, we are often told and\, indeed\, often tell ourselves that this hate is unproductive\, that it is something we need to work though\, that this rage is something we need to release for our movements and for ourselves. But is love always the answer? Dr. Stanley will help us explore this provocative question.” \nStanley is an assistant professor in UC Berkeley’s Department of Gender and Women’s Studies and also is affiliated with the Haas LGBTQ Citizenship Research Cluster and the Program in Critical Theory. \nSponsored by the College of Liberal Arts Lottery Fund\, the talk is free and open to the public. \nIt will take place at: 4:40 p.m. on Tuesday\, May 14\, in the Advanced Technology Laboratories (No. 7) on campus.
