SUMMARY:Watercolor Artist Virginia Mack Exihibit
DESCRIPTION:Virginia Mack is a native Californian. She has been exploring and savoring the wild lands of the state throughout her life. She has been living on the Central Coast for 15 years. She is a part-time instructor at Cuesta College in the fine arts departments. \nVirginia works primarily in watercolors and mixed media and is a colorist at heart. She builds most of her pieces in a wet-on-wet process (wet watercolor paints on wet watercolor paper) resolving the pieces as the paper slowly dries. She creates the forms with rich colors that she plays off against contrasting colors thereby subduing them while preserving their presence in layers of color. She often mixes the watercolor process with work using colored pencils\, pastel\, charcoal\, and pencil. \nVirginia received her education in fine arts at the University of California\, Berkeley. She has taken additional classes at The California College of Arts and Crafts and in independent workshops. \nOpening Reception: FRIDAY\, JANUARY 13TH\, 2017 from 5pm to 8pm\nEvent Contact Number: 805-772-1068

SUMMARY:SLO Little Theatre presents Audition Like a Pro!
DESCRIPTION:General Audition Information\nThank you for your interest in being in one of our shows! We want this to be the best possible experience for everyone\, so we have a few things we’d like to familiarize you with prior to the audition process. At the Little Theatre\, being part of a show is a commitment – to the theatre and to your fellow cast members. Therefore\, we expect the following commitment from our cast members: \nScheduling\nWe ask that you consider that theatre is a time-intensive commitment\, requiring that you prioritize your schedule accordingly\, placing rehearsals at the top of your list. Please do not audition if you do not plan to accept a role if offered to you. If you are planning to audition for another show which might interfere with your commitment to the one at the Little Theatre or if you have known conflicts for rehearsal or performance dates\, you must notify the theatre of these conflicts at the audition. Part of what the theatre relies on is your commitment\, your word\, that you will fulfill your obligation\, once you are cast. Without that assurance the theatre cannot continue to operate. Preliminary rehearsal schedules for all productions will be listed with audition notices. \nFocus\nYou must be able to bring a sense of focus and concentration to rehearsals and performances\, leave your everyday concerns and personal issues outside the theatre doors\, and be willing to fully engage in the play-building process. We need your imagination\, creativity\, and inspiration\, but no negative energy\, which only diminishes a creative atmosphere. If you consistently bring negative energy into the rehearsal room\, you will be replaced. \nAny specific questions about audition policies\, please email Kevin Harris.

SUMMARY:Latino Diaspora: Photography by Joe Schwartz
DESCRIPTION:Joe Schwartz was a remarkable photographer and local legend best known for capturing the essence of human dignity in settings of economic disparity. The San Luis Obispo Museum of Art is proud to present Latino Diaspora\, an exhibition of rarely or never-seen photography from the Joe Schwartz Estate on view from January 6 – February 26\, 2017. The SLOMA exhibition highlights photographs taken in Los Angeles housing projects and Mexico around the 1950s. A public opening of the exhibition will take place in conjunction with Art After Dark on Friday\, January 6\, 2017 from 6 PM – 9 PM. \nArtist\, activist\, and humanitarian Joe Schwartz was born and raised in Brooklyn\, New York. He served as a combat photographer in the Marines during WWII. As a member of the legendary Photo League\, he sought to portray the lives of ordinary Americans in the urban environment. Schwartz moved to Atascadero\, California in 1985 and lived there until he died in 2013. He was a prolific photographer and is recognized worldwide for his ability to capture special moments with the sensibility of a participant\, not a spectator. His photography won numerous awards and is displayed in collections worldwide\, including the recently opened Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. \nToday\, Schwartz’s work serves as a reminder that poverty and dire social conditions cannot erase the strength and beauty of the human spirit. His photographic legacy offers a timely reminder that grim issues still exist today. An interactive “Talk Back Wall” will create space for comments and reactions to the exhibition and life today.

SUMMARY:Art After Dark San Luis Obispo

SUMMARY:Cal Poly University Art Gallery to Exhibit Work of Michael Miller
DESCRIPTION:Gallery opening reception and celebration of life set for Jan. 12\nSAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly’s University Art Gallery will present a retrospective of work by Michael Miller\, a former Cal Poly faculty member in the Art and Design Department and mentor and friend to many\, from Thursday\, Jan. 12 through Friday\, Feb. 10. An opening reception and celebration of life will take place Thursday\, Jan. 12 at 5 p.m. in the University Art Gallery\, located on the ground floor of the Dexter Building (No. 34). \nIn 2012\, Miller was diagnosed with brain cancer\, and over the next two years the tumor affected the area of the brain responsible for language. Miller\, who died Nov. 14\, 2014\, faced this devastating loss with courage and took the opportunity to devote more time to his spiritual and meditation practice. He also continued his daily practice of drawing\, and the detailed drawings and vibrant watercolors that fill his sketchbooks\, along with the sensitive and thought-provoking writings he composed during his illness\, are a testament to the remarkable talent and brilliant intellect for which Miller was known throughout his life. These never-before-exhibited sketchbooks will be on view during the University Art Gallery retrospective. \nShaped by myriad influences that include anthropology\, film\, literature\, poetry\, and critical theory\, Miller’s studio practice was dynamic and wide-ranging. His keen powers of observation\, along with his unique and finely-tuned sense of color\, line\, form\, and composition\, are evident throughout his drawing\, watercolor\, sculpture\, and installation projects. Above all\, Miller approached art as a calling\, and he firmly believed in its transformative potential\, that art could — and frequently did — change the world. \nMiller exhibited his work widely and had solo shows in many prestigious venues\, including POST Gallery in Los Angeles\, Los Angeles Center for Photographic Studies\, Sweeney Art Gallery at U.C. Riverside\, the California Museum of Photography at U.C. Riverside\, the Art Centre at Silpakorn University\, the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum\, the Cuesta College Art Gallery\, Long Beach City College Art Gallery\, the Torrance Art Museum\, and Patricia Sweetow Gallery in San Francisco. \nThe University Art Gallery is free and open to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. It is located in room 171 in the Dexter Building (No. 34).
