SUMMARY:FINE ART CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING
DESCRIPTION:Jarien de Ham began Chinese brush painting in 2002 with a class offered at Cuesta College. Bird and Flower painting\, one of the four genres of Chinese painting\, drew her in. Then came Calligraphy and classes in China that covered Landscape and Figure painting. While we are a long way from China here on the Central Coast\, many elements revered in China are here — cypress trees with their irregular balance\, foggy atmosphere\, fish and birds which are subjects of her paintings.

SUMMARY:FINE ART DRAWING
DESCRIPTION:Linda likes to draw inspiring natural scenes—coastal panoramas\, oak covered hillsides\, flowers and wildlife. While she’s always enjoyed drawing and art\, she learned to draw well while studying landscape architecture in college. In 1998\, she began focusing her artistic efforts on colored pencil drawing and has slowly built up her portfolio. \nEach picture takes about 20 to 25 hours to complete\, depending on the complexity of the background. She starts with a line drawing\, slowly building up multiple layers of color to achieve the depth and intensity she’s looking for. Linda lives with her family in the mountains between Morro Bay and Atascadero.

SUMMARY:Cal Poly Jazz Night Concert
DESCRIPTION:Cal Poly’s University Jazz Bands will present their annual Jazz Night Concert at 8 p.m. Friday\, June 2\, in Spanos Theatre on the Cal Poly campus.\nThe concert will feature works from several jazz composers who are pushing the boundaries of what jazz is and can be.\nThe University Jazz Band I will perform two works by Grammy award winning composer Jim McNeeley\, who has composed for and led several prominent U.S. and European big bands. McNeeley’s “Finally” is a fascinating\, asymmetric\, post-bop composition and “Absolution” is a haunting\, ethereal work. Several jazz bands soloists will have the chance to offer their take on McNeeley’s themes through their improvisations.\nThe University Jazz Band II will perform “Nightfall” by Adam Theis\, the leader of the Jazz Mafia collective of jazz bands. Based in San Francisco\, Theis is one of a younger generation of jazz composers and performers who are bringing rap and hip-hop into the contemporary big band.\nAlso featured will be a humorous composition by Cal Poly’s Director of Jazz Studies Paul Rinzler that strings together a series of cliche endings\, titled “One More Time.”\nTickets are $14 for the public and $9 for students. Event parking is sponsored by the Performing Arts Center. Tickets are sold at the Cal Poly Ticket Office between noon and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. To order by phone\, call 805-SLO-4TIX (805-756-4849).\nThe concert is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Music Department and College of Liberal Arts.
