SUMMARY:Steel Magnolia's at the Great American Melodrama
DESCRIPTION:One of the country’s most popular plays is set to premier at the Great American Melodrama in Oceano: Robert Harling’s Steel Magnolias. This charming comedy about the bonds of friendship spawned the popular Oscar-nominated film version and follows the same story. “It’s a delightful play to open our season with. It’s so funny\, so well-written\, and the best actors wanted to work on the project\,” said Melodrama Artistic Director Dan Schultz. \nSet in Louisiana in the 1980’s\, Steel Magnolias is the tale of six Southern women who gather under the hair dryers of their local salon to gossip\, laugh\, and share stories and insults. Full of big characters\, big hair\, and big laughs\, the events turn serious when the group shares a tragic loss. You’ll fall in love with these women who are “delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel.” Directed by Robyne Parrish\, and featuring Suzy Newman (M’Lynn)\, Patty Thayer (Clairee)\, Katie Worley Beck (Annelle)\, Eleise Moore (Truvy)\, Bonner Church (Ouiser) and Rebecca Tucker (Shelby)\, the show is sure to delight audiences from across the Central Coast. \nFollowing each performance of Steel Magnolias is the brand new vaudeville revue\, The Queens of Comedy. It’s a hilarious tribute to your favorite comediennes from the last 100 years. Featuring song\, dance\, and comedy\, the Queens of Comedy is a perfect capper to an evening of incredible live theatre. It’s directed by Sarah Wussow and features choreography by Katie Fuchs Wackowski. \nThese shows play January 24 – March 10. Performances are Thursday and Fridays at 7 pm\, Saturdays at 3 and 7 pm\, and Sundays at 6 pm. The Melodrama’s in-house snack bar features great food and drinks served before the show and during intermissions. Tickets are $23 to $30\, with discounts available for groups\, seniors\, students\, active military\, and children. For more information and to purchase tickets\, call the Melodrama Box Office\, at 805-489-2499\, or visit www.americanmelodrama.com. The Great American Melodrama is located on Highway 1 in Oceano\, just three miles south of Pismo Beach. Come see they’re brand new box office building across from the theatre\, you can’t miss it.  The Melodrama has been providing professional family entertainment on the Central Coast since 1975.

SUMMARY:Wine Becomes Art: Exhibition Show at San Luis Obispo Museum of Art

SUMMARY:The 32nd Annual Fashion Show at Alex Madonna Expo Center
DESCRIPTION:It is an incredible honor to build upon the legacy of the Phyllis Madonna Fashion Show. For over 30 years\, this event has been an icon of the Central Coast philanthropic and social calendar. \nAs we look ahead to 2019 and beyond\, we can hardly wait for the contagious energy and surprises to come. Unlike anything else on the Central Coast\, this event highlights the musical and choreographed visions of our Executive Producers\, Stephen Patrick and Todd LeMay\, paired with the fashion of the Madonna Inn Boutique. Amongst the company of our dearest community friends\, the show’s vision is pulled together under the direction of Executive Director\, Toni Detz. The 2019 Fashion Show will leave attendees inspired by the entertainment and proud to support our community in this one-of-a-kind way.

SUMMARY:Cal Poly’s University Jazz Bands to Showcase Improvisation at Just Jazz Concert
DESCRIPTION:The art of improvisation will be showcased at Cal Poly’s University Jazz Bands annual Just Jazz concert at 8 p.m. Saturday\, March 2\, in Harold J. Miossi Hall in the Performing Arts Center’s Christopher Cohan Center. \n  \n“The excitement and surprise inherent in the art of improvisation will be in the hands of a new generation of jazz musicians\,” said Paul Rinzler\, director of jazz studies. “It’s great to hear the emotion and the attitude that the students bring to the craft of jazz improvisation. Their personalities really shine through in a way that makes it easy for an audience to appreciate and to accompany the musician on the journey that is jazz improvisation.” \n  \nTwo big bands — each with four trumpets\, four trombones\, five saxophones\, rhythm section and a vocalist — and two smaller jazz combos will present jazz repertoire from several different eras and styles. Included will be “Rush!” from the anime TV series “Cowboy Bebop”; “Big Swing Face\,” originally recorded by the big band of drummer Buddy Rich; an epic combination of jazz and hip-hop titled “Grass is Greener”; as well as traditional jazz\, Latin jazz and more. \n  \nTickets are $12 or $14 for the public and $9 or $12 for students and Jazz Federation members. Event parking is sponsored by the PAC. Buy tickets at the Cal Poly Ticket Office between noon and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. To order by phone\, call 805-SLO-4TIX (805-756-4849). \n  \nThe Music Department offers a 10 percent discount to patrons who buy season tickets to four of its events through the Cal Poly Ticket Office; a 15 percent discount is given on tickets to five or more events. \n  \nThe concert is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Music Department\, the College of Liberal Arts and Instructionally Related Activities program. For more information\, call the Music Department at 805-756-2406 or visit its calendar website. \n  \nLinks \n— Performing Arts Center’s Christopher Cohan Center: maps.calpoly.edu/place/bldg-006-0/ \n— Cal Poly Ticket Office: tickets.calpoly.edu \n— Cal Poly Music Department Calendar: music.calpoly.edu/calendar/ \n
