SUMMARY:The Great American Melodrama Presents: Unnecessary Farce
DESCRIPTION:UNNECESSARY FARCE\nBy Paul Slade Smith \nMarch 14 – April 28 \nTwo cops. Three crooks. Eight doors. Go! The hysterical comedy Unnecessary Farce by Paul Slade Smith arrives at The Great American Melodrama on March 14. Featuring some of the Melodrama’s funniest actors\, Unnecessary Farce is sure to tickle event he most fickle funny-bones. “This is a show for people who love big laughs and big characters\,” says Dan Schultz\, the Melodrama’s Artistic Director.  \nLike all farces\, the convoluted plot sets up a series of hilarious misunderstandings. Set in a cheap motel room\, an embezzling mayor (Billy Breed) meets with his female accountant (Rebecca Tucker). In the next room\, two cops (Eleise Moore and Nick Wilder) wait to catch the meeting on video. But there’s some confusion as to who’s in which room and who’s taken the money. Then things go to another level when the Scottish hit man with anger issues shows up. This show is truly laugh-a-minute. Some content may not be appropriate for little kids\, so the show is rated PG. \nFollowing every performance of Unnecessary Farce is the brand new vaudeville revue\, The Jungle Adventure. Put together by Melodrama favorite Katie Worley Beck\, it’s a musical trip into the jungle primeval. You’ll meet a witch doctor\, take a jungle cruise\, and see Tarzan and Jane like never before.  Featuring song\, dance\, and comedy\, The Jungle Adventure is the perfect end to a night of great theatre. \nThese shows play March 14 – April 28. Performances are Wednesday through Fridays at 7 pm\, Saturdays at 3 and 7 pm\, and Sundays at 6 pm. The Melodrama’s in-house snack bar features great food and drinks served before the show and during intermissions. Tickets are $23 to $30\, with discounts available for groups\, seniors\, students\, active military\, and children. For more information and to purchase tickets\, call the Melodrama Box Office\, at 805-489-2499\, or visit www.americanmelodrama.com. The Great American Melodrama is located on Highway 1 in Oceano\, just three miles south of Pismo Beach. Come see their brand new box office building across from the theatre\, you can’t miss it.  The Melodrama has been providing professional family entertainment on the Central Coast since 1975. \n  \n

Joy \nLive at the SLO Brew Rock Event Center on April 4th\, 2019 \nDoors at 7 PM | Ages 18+ \nTickets at slobrew.com/live \n* Standing Room Only * \n  \nAbout: Mt. Joy started off as a rekindling of shared musical ambitions between Philadelphia high school friends Matt Quinn (vocals\, guitar) and Sam Cooper (guitar). Reunited in Los Angeles thanks to the ebbs and flows of adult life\, the pair met multi-instrumentalist Michael Byrnes through a Craigslist ad. They named themselves Mt. Joy as an ode to a mountain in Valley Forge National Park near Sam’s childhood home\, and together\, with Byrnes’ roommate Caleb Nelson producing\, they recorded three songs and sent them out into the world\, hoping for the best. \nMuch to the band’s amazement\, “Astrovan” accomplished the impossible. Without initial promotion or fanfare\, the song took off on Spotify\, racking up 5 million streams to date. “The irony of ‘Astrovan’ was that song was really about being stuck in a life and wanting to have the opportunity to pursue a dream\, and in an instant it gave us that opportunity. ” Quinn says. Mt. Joy quickly transitioned from a part-time calling into a full-fledged band rounded out by Byrnes on bass\, Sotiris Eliopoulos on drums and Jackie Miclau on keyboard. \nCome 2017\, Mt. Joy hit the road\, and hit it hard: They played tour dates alongside the likes of The Shins\, The Head and The Heart\, The Lone Bellow\, and Whitney\, and popped up at some of the summer’s biggest festivals\, including Bonnaroo\, Newport Folk Festival\, Lollapalooza and Made In America. They eventually caught the attention of Dualtone Records and began work on their debut album\, ‘Mt. Joy’. \nSteeped in folk-rock tradition and powered by the intuitive creative connection between Quinn and Cooper\, the songs on ‘Mt. Joy’ depict Quinn wrestling with his own conscience\, where the mundane and the fantastic collide as he processes tragedy\, society\, and love. \nTaken together\, the self titled ‘Mt. Joy’ LP is a startlingly open document\, wracked with the anxieties and fears that come just as life seems to start working out. It’s a natural reaction from a wary band like Mt. Joy – the result of a sort of professional vertigo\, as they’ve gone from virtual unknowns to hot young commodity in little over a year. But there’s a sense of hope underlying everything\, girded by the fact that the Mt. Joy LP is an impressive\, honest portrayal of a young band facing that moment where dreams become reality\, and finding beauty in the exhilarating uncertainty of it all.

SUMMARY:★HIRIE AT THE SLO BREW ROCK EVENT CENTER★
DESCRIPTION:SLO Brew Rock\n855 Aerovista Place\, San Luis Obispo\, CA\nApril 5\, 2019\n7:00 pm  | Ages: 18+\n$20.00\n Buy Tickets\n\n\n\nEvent Information\nLive at the SLO Brew Rock Event Center: HIRIE \nApril 5\, 2019 at 7 PM \nAges 18+ \nTickets $20 ADV / $25 DOS from slobrew.com/live or Boo Boo Records \n* Standing Room Only * \nAbout: Hirie — the frontwoman of the exhilarating reggae band HIRIE — grew up a global citizen. Her father worked for the United Nations and she was born in the Philippines\, spent years in Italy\, before her family settled in Hawaii\, which became her spiritual home. \n  \nWhile in Hawaii\, Hirie fell in love with reggae music\, and took to the culture naturally. On the radio\, and in conversation\, she would hear the exclamation “iris.” The popular reggae term is derived from a Jamaican patois\, and it encompasses warmth and positivity — it’s a greeting\, an affectionate term of approval\, and a mindset. In these painfully complex times\, we could all use some irie in our life. \nSan Diego’s seven-piece band HIRIE is ready to offer a global spiritual uplift. Melding the balmy island touches of its singer’s beloved home — as symbolized by its moniker’s first letter\, a “H” for “Hawaii\,” with that feeling of irie\, the award-winning group offers a soundtrack of hope. Now\, with its masterful new album\, Wandering Soul\, brimming with invigorating female-fronted shamanistic reggae an oasis of positivity is just an album away. \n“Hirie is a lifestyle choice\, it’s about healing the body\, the mind\, and the spirit. Our fans and our band are always saying ‘let’s get HIRIE\,’ it’s a way to detach from the painful complexities of the world\, and bask in joyous energy\,” says the band’s lead singer and sage who has taken the band’s namesake for her own. \nHIRIE is poppy and purposeful\, harnessing the power of accessible songcraft\, social consciousness\, world class musicianship\, and the disarming and spellbinding qualities of reggae\, the band exudes mainstream appeal without diluting its artistic vision. HIRIE is Hirie lead vocals\, guitar\, uke; Chris Hampton saxophone\, flute\, melodica\, and accordion; Andrew McKee trombone\, guitar\, didgeridoo\, and percussion; Andy Flores bass; Blaine Dillinger lead guitar; and Joey Muraoka on drums.

SUMMARY:Cal Poly Hosts Steel Bridge Competition Regional Finals
DESCRIPTION:Cal Poly on Saturday will host the annual Student Steel Bridge Competition regional finals featuring 18 universities from four Western states. Students will assemble their bridges using power tools and wrenches. There is drama associated with placing the span pieces in the correct order and bolt tightening and as teams work compete against the clock. These students “represent the next generation of civil and environmental engineers\,” said Professor Charles Chadwell\, the chairman of Cal Poly’s Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. The competition tests students’ understanding of civil engineering\, problem solving and proficiency in fabrication techniques such as welding and machining. \n  \nWhen: 8 a.m. to noon; 1 to 4 p.m. \nWhere: H-1 parking lot on Mt. Bishop Drive \nDirections: Take Cal Poly’s Highland Drive entrance off Highway 1. Turn left (west) on Mt. Bishop. The lot is on the left about a quarter mile from the intersection. \nMap: https://maps.calpoly.edu/@35.3040460\,-120.6681047\,16.5z \n  \nMore Information: Cal Poly’s chapter of the American Institute of Steel Construction is hosting the event. The steel spans were judged Thursday for aesthetics. Cal Poly’s team is led by project manager Elaina Ryan\, a civil engineering senior from Camarillo. She said student teams had to build a steel bridge that is 23 feet long and 43 inches wide based on “a set of design requirements and challenges.” The competition mimics a “real-world” project\, with every aspect of the competition converted to dollar amounts. Ultimately\, the most cost-effective bridge wins\, she said. “They design a bridge to meet these requirements while ensuring that the bridge is light\, strong and can be assembled easily\,” Ryan said. “The students then fabricate their bridge\, and create a construction technique. One of the most important parts of the competition is that the bridge must be able to break down into sections not exceeding 42 inches in length.” Team captains will meet at 7 p.m. to determine Saturday start times for each respective team
