SUMMARY:BELONGING | Kut to be the Best documentary screening
DESCRIPTION:February 1st Kut to be the Best documentary screening at The Kinney SLO\, 1800 Monterey Street. \nBe among the first see this original short documentary about the closing of the last Black-owned barbershop in San Luis Obispo. \nHistorically\, the barbershop has provided a crucial sense of place for the Black community; and this is especially true on the Central Coast. For nine years\, Terry Guillford owed and operated Kut to be the Best\, the only Black-owned barbershop in San Luis Obispo. A multicultural yet unapologetically Black space in a predominantly White community\, Kut to be the Best was an essential cultural outlet for many. \nDirected and edited by SLO County raised filmmaker Justice Whitaker and produced by San Luis Obispo local Courtney Haile — co-founder of R.A.C.E. Matters SLO County; Kut to be the Best is part of the larger event and exhibit series entitled BELONGING: Local Expressions of Black Empowerment and Possibility. \nFilm contains some strong language. Limited Capacity. Reservations Required. \nThe first screening + Q&A is full! Stay tuned for information on future screenings on racematterslo.org. \n\nAdditional BELONGING events\, include: \nFebruary 1st through April 30th Portraits and Perspectives at Downtown SLO\, 1135 Chorro St. \nFebruary 1st through April 30th Portraits and Perspectives at San Luis Obispo Library\, 995 Palm St. \nFebruary 7th Art After Dark at Downtown SLO \nFebruary 12th Black Business Belongs: Black Business Leaders Forum moderated by City Councilwoman Erica Stewart\, at SeaCrest Hotel. \nFebruary 29th Stories Matter: An evening of live storytelling at The Kinney SLO. \nIn commemoration of Black History Month\, on February 1st local organization R.A.C.E. SUMMARY:Fremont Theater Presents: COURTNEY BARNETT
DESCRIPTION:With: Hachiku\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDESCRIPTION\nAbout this Event \nSpecial Guest\, Hachiku\, will open the show. \nTickets On-Sale NOW \n♦ SHOW INFORMATION ♦ \nDoor Time- 8:00 PM\nAll Ages \n♦ TICKET OUTLET ♦ \nBoo Boo Records\n978 Monterey St • SLO\nMon-Wed 10-8\, Thurs-Sat 10-9\, Sun 11-6 \n♦ BAND INFORMATION ♦ \nCourtney Barnett is one of the most distinctive and compelling voices in indie rock\, a singer-songwriter who mixes deeply insightful observations with devastating self-assessment. With countless awards in her home of Australia as well as Grammy and BRIT nominations\, fawning press and an adoring audiences\, Barnett’s rise to global prominence feels both unprecedented and important. \nMusic fans have rarely witnessed the breathless acclaim and superlatives that comprised reviews of Barnett’s debut album “Sometimes I Sit And Think\, And Sometimes I Just Sit” — Rolling Stone praised her as “one of the sharpest\, most original songwriters around — at any level\, in any genre… a self-strafing humorist á la Lena Dunham who’s also a Dylan-style word ninja.” 2017 saw the release of the wonderful album “Lotta Sea Lice\,” an introspective but beautiful album of duets with Kurt Vile and a gorgeous place-holder while we awaited the release of her world-weary-but-fierce sophomore solo album “Tell Me How You Really Feel.” \nWhile her lyrics continue to encompass the poetic\, political and personal\, “Tell Me…” reveals a startling new lyrical economy. Barnett’s newest songs reveal myriad layers of meaning in seemingly every line\, all the while accompanied by her own face-melting guitar and one of the best rhythm sections in rock. Her increasingly unusual song-structures\, timbres and moods hint at future ambition while her glorious\, feed-back heavy live show has eviscerated audiences on 5 continents.

SUMMARY:Cal Poly Presents Change the Subject Documentary
DESCRIPTION:Cal Poly to Present ‘Change the Subject’ Documentary\, Discussion on Feb. 4  \nCal Poly Kennedy Library invites community members to a screening of the documentary “Change the Subject” from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday Feb. 4\, in the Spanos Theatre at Cal Poly. Dartmouth College student activists and librarian Jill Baron\, who are featured in the documentary\, will hold a panel discussion after the screening. \nThe film tells the story of Dartmouth College students who were committed to advancing the rights and dignity of undocumented people by challenging the use of the term “illegal aliens” as a subject heading in the library catalog. This term became a flashpoint in the immigration debate on Capitol Hill\, demonstrating the ways language can be weaponized to divide and dehumanize people. It also marks the first time in U.S. history that Congress intervened to prevent routine updating of terms by the Library of Congress. \nThe students’ advocacy took them from Dartmouth’s Baker-Berry Library to the halls of Congress\, demonstrating how an instance of campus activism entered the national spotlight and how a cataloging term became a flashpoint in the immigration debate on Capitol Hill. \nThe documentary earned official selection entry status into the Maine International Film Festival and the Boston Latino International Film Festival. \nThe event is free and open to the public; tickets are not required. Parking in the Grand Avenue parking structure costs $10 and can be purchased from parking attendants at the lot entrance. \nThe screening and discussion are sponsored by Cal Poly’s Kennedy Library\, Academic Affairs\, Office of University Diversity and Inclusion\, Chicanx Latinx Faculty Staff Association\, School of Education and Career Services Diversity Funding Committee\, as well as Cuesta College’s Office of Equity. Additional collaboration was provided by the Dartmouth College Baker-Berry Library\, Central Coast Coalition for Undocumented Student Success\, Cal Poly Dream Center\, Cuesta College Monarch Center\, and Allan Hancock Aim to Dream Center. \nFor more information\, contact Catherine J. Trujillo\, curator of Creative Works at Kennedy Library\, at 805-756-6395. To watch a trailer of “Change the Subject\,” visit: https://sites.dartmouth.edu/changethesubject/trailer/.

HAILING FROM THE BAY AREA\, VOGEL MOVED TO LOS ANGELES TO PURSUE A CAREER IN MUSIC. IN JUST ONE YEAR\, HE WENT FROM AN ASPIRING PRODUCER IN THE CROWD OF HARD SUMMER\, TO PLAYING THE MAIN STAGE. JAUZ’S RELEASE OF THE ADDICTIVE MID-TEMPO ORIGINAL “FEEL THE VOLUME” EARNED HIM INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION AFTER ITS RELEASE ON MAD DECENT. \nGARNERING SUPPORT EARLY ON FROM THE INDUSTRY HEAVYWEIGHTS LIKE ZEDD\, SKRILLEX\, DIPLO\, AND OTHERS\, JAUZ QUICKLY BECAME A FREQUENT ON EVERY MAJOR FESTIVAL LINEUP. HIS EUPHORIC ORIGINALS AND VIRAL REMIXES SEAMLESSLY WEAVE IN AND OUT OF SEVERAL MUSICAL CATEGORIES. SINCE THEN\, JAUZ HAS BOASTED TWO SELL-OUT TOURS “THE FRIENDZY TOUR” IN 2016 AND THE BITE AMERICA! TOUR IN 2018 TO LAUNCH HIS ARTIST LABEL “BITE THIS!” \nIN 55 DIFFERENT CITIES ACROSS THE US AND CANADA. ALL WHILE ALSO RELEASING HIS DEBUT ALBUM “THE WISE & THE WICKED” THAT REACHED #1 ON THE DANCE CHARTS IN UNDER 2 HOURS AND EARNED OVER 20 MILLION STREAMS IN LESS THAN 3 WEEKS FROM ITS AUGUST 31ST RELEASE. THIS YEAR JAUZ SHUT DOWN THE SAHARA TENT AT COACHELLA WITH A PERFORMANCE THAT REACHED 100 MILLION IMPRESSIONS OVER WEEKEND 1 WITH THE HELP OF HIS OFFICIAL REMIX FOR PINKFONG’S INTERNATIONATIONAL PHENOMENON “BABY SHARK”. \nKEEPING BUSY WITH FESTIVALS ALL OVER THE WORLD\, JAUZ BEGAN HIS TELEVSION CAREER WITH DISCOVERY CHANNEL AS A GUEST HOST/DJ ON SHARK WEEK’S ‘SHARK AFTER DARK’ ALONGSIDE ROB RIGGLE. NOW JAUZ RETURNS WITH HIS NEWLY ANNOUNCED ‘DANGEROUS WATERS’ TOUR & EP. WHO KNOWS WHAT ELSE IS INSTORE FOR THE SHARKSQUAD BUT ONE THING IS FOR SURE\, JAUZ CONTINUES TO KEEP TRUE TO HIS CREED “MUSIC HAS NO BOUNDARIES” \nDREZO \nIt is rare now in a music scene of tiring trends for an artist to break the mold and make a statement creatively that people can connect to. However\, Drezo challenges the mainstream standard by staying true to his own powerful underground sound of house music. Through his compositions and remixes\, the L.A. based producer aims to represent the darker and more imaginative side of EDM. With releases on OWSLA & Mad Decent\, and a collaboration with Dillion Francis\, Drezo has proven that his haunting surge of originality is being accepted by the masses. Constantly devoting time in the studio has helped him evolve and innovate towards a sound that is now being widely recognized by the likes of Diplo\, Destructo\, Porter Robinson\, Tchami\, Zedd\, DJ Snake\, Skrillex\, Boyz Noize and more\, solidifying Drezo’s placement among the world’s top tier dance producers.

Madonna Inn has graciously donated this space in support of SLOU40 and we are grateful to them for their continued support. Help us say thank you! \nNot Your Parents’ Candidate Forum \nSan Luis Obispo\, CA— Voters are invited to get to know local candidates for office in a speed-dating style forum tonight at the Madonna Inn Garden Room at 6:00 PM. With the goal of facilitating mindful dialogue and educating the electorate\, attendees are encouraged to ask candidates whatever questions they want\, providing the interaction honors the Code of Civility. \nThe third of such forums hosted by SLO U40\, the “speed-dating” format produces dialogue that deviates from candidates’ standard stump speeches and gives voters rare face-to-face access to the candidates vying for their vote. Seated at round tables\, candidates spend a specified amount of time fielding questions from attendees. When time is up\, candidates rotate to the next table and repeat the process\, allowing each attendee to connect directly with candidates and get their most pressing questions answered. \nVoters will have the opportunity to engage directly with the following candidates for office: \n\nAndy Caldwell\, United States Representative\, 24th District\nKenneth Young\, United States Representative\, 24th District\nStacy Korsgaden\, Board of Supervisor 3rd District\nAdam Hill\, Board of Supervisor 3rd District\nEllen Beraud\, Board of Supervisor 5th District\nDebbie Arnold\, Board of Supervisor 5th District\n\nThe forum is free to attend; however\, space is limited\, and SLO U40 candidate forums have a history of “selling out.” RSVPs and early arrival are encouraged\, as the forum begins promptly at 6:00 PM. \nAbout SLO U40: SLO U40 acts as a conduit for education\, engagement\, and action relating to the community. SLO U40 is a non-partisan and non-affiliated organization that brings together passionate people who are driven to improve how we all live\, work\, and play on the Central Coast.

SUMMARY:SLO REP Presents\, Always... Patsy Cline
DESCRIPTION:Show Times\nFebruary 7 – March 8\, 2020\nWed-Sun @ 7 pm\nSat & Sun @ 2 pm\nBased on a true story. \nAlways…Patsy Cline is a delightful musical about friendship\, country music and a brilliant artist who left us all too soon. More than a tribute to the legendary country singer who died tragically at age 30 in a plane crash in 1963\, Always…Patsy Cline is a true story about Cline’s friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger\, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in 1961\, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death. \nThe musical play\, complete with down home country humor\, poignant tales of life on the road and even some audience participation\, includes many of Patsy’s unforgettable hits such as Crazy\, I Fall to Pieces\, Sweet Dreams and Walking After Midnight — 27 songs in all!  The show’s title was inspired by Cline’s letters to Seger\, which were consistently signed “Love ALWAYS… Patsy Cline.” \nCreated and originally directed by Ted Swindley\nDirected by Kevin Harris\nMusical Direction by Wendy Feaver\nScenic Design by David Linfield
