SUMMARY:Cal Poly Virtual Symphony Fall Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, Dec. 4\n7:30 p.m.\, Virtual \nThe Cal Poly Symphony will present music of Gordon Jacob\, George Walker and Ludwig van Beethoven in its fall virtual presentation at 7:30 p.m. Friday\, Dec. 4. \nIn addition to the 20-minute concert portion\, student musicians will be interviewed about their experiences with the challenging process of preparing for and presenting a concert during a pandemic\, and videos from fall quarter rehearsals will be shown. \n“For the first time\, the Cal Poly Symphony has been rehearsing as a hybrid ensemble\,” said David Arrivée\, conductor. A small group of string players have been rehearsing in person\, while others join virtually via Zoom. Outside\, some of the members of the wind and brass sections rehearse separately and are joined by others via Zoom. All those who meet in person follow all health and safety protocols. The concert will feature recordings of these disparate groups\, combined into a single performance. \nThe program will begin with the first movement of Jacob’s “Old Wine in New Bottles\,” a collection of old English folk tunes — the “Old Wine” of the title — arranged for wind instruments. The first movement\, titled “The Wraggle Taggle Gypsies\,” is based on the tune of the same name. \nThe program will continue with Walker’s “Lyric for Strings\,” written when the composer was doing graduate work at the Curtis Institute of Music. Originally titled “Lament\,” the work was an artistic response to the death of Walker’s grandmother. \nWalker began his career as a piano virtuoso and gave his first public recital at the age of 14. He graduated with highest honors from Oberlin College and was one of the first Black Americans to graduate from Curtis in 1945. His career included many firsts for a Black instrumentalist: he was the first to perform in Manhattan’s Town Hall\, the first to perform with the Philadelphia Orchestra\, the first to be signed by a major management\, the first to earn a doctorate from the Eastman School of Music\, and in 1996\, he became the first Black composer to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize in music. \nThe program will also include the second movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A Major\, which was composed between 1811 and 1812\, while the composer was restoring his health in Teplice\, a spa town in Bohemia. At the 1813 premiere\, conducted by Beethoven at a charity concert for soldiers wounded in the Battle of Hanau\, the Allegretto second movement was met with such enthusiasm that it had to be encored. This popularity began a long tradition of performing this movement separately. \nTickets to the virtual event are $5 and can be purchased online from the Performing Arts Center. To order by phone\, call 805-SLO-4TIX (805-756-4849) between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The event link and password will be emailed the morning of the event

SUMMARY:History Center Holiday BBQ
DESCRIPTION:WE’RE LIGHTING THE GRILL \nFill your mind with the diverse history of the Brooks Street/Eto Park neighborhood\, and fill your belly with delicious tri tip with all the fixings! You’ll be able to save yourself having to cook one night during the busy holiday season\, while at the same time doing good by supporting the History Center. \nAt one time\, the area of South and Brooks Streets was Japantown\, inhabited by a thriving community of Japanese-Americans. With World War II came the shameful practice of internment\, where Americans of Japanese descent were taken from their homes and held in camps away from the coast. World War II also brought new people to the city\, including the families of African American soldiers serving at Camp San Luis and Camp Roberts\, many of whom made the neighborhood home. \nToday\, both legacies stand literally side by side\, with Eto Park and St Luke Missionary Baptist Church being directly next door to each other. \n  \nJoin us on Sunday\, December 6th for our Covid-safe drive-thru barbeque. Without needing to leave your car\, you will get:\nA full tri-tip\, a full loaf of french bread\, salad and beans – enough food for four big eaters.\nA free Self-Guided Walking Tour to the historic Eto Park/Brook Street neighborhood \n  \nThe satisfaction of knowing you’re supporting the preservation of our county’s history \nSome people have reported having difficulties registering using mobile devices. We are working to solve this issue. If you are having trouble\, please call us at (805) 543-0638 or email info@historycenterslo.org.

SUMMARY:Third Annual 'Help 4 Hungry' Drive with Food 4 Less
DESCRIPTION:Ralphs and Food 4 Less announce the return of their Help 4 the Hungry food donation drive at stores throughout California. Now in its third year\, the month-long campaign raises awareness and funds to feed tens of thousands of people in need —  a need that has grown as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. \nFrom November 23 through December 24\, shoppers can donate $1\, $5 or $10 at the register or by texting H4H to 41444. One hundred percent of proceeds benefit regional food banks in Los Angeles\, Orange County\, Riverside\, San Bernardino\, Santa Barbara\, San Diego and Ventura counties. \n“We are so grateful to our customers and community supporters who so generously choose to give to the campaign each year\,” said John Votava\, director\, corporate affairs\, Ralphs. “As a company\, Ralphs is working towards a bold goal of achieving a world with Zero Hunger | Zero Waste. The Help 4 the Hungry campaign is one of the many ways in which we reach that goal.” \nDonating is easy and available through multiple methods to accommodate everyone taking caution during the pandemic. Shoppers at Ralphs or Food 4 Less can ask the cashier to add a cash donation to their total at checkout or can make a donation anytime on a mobile phone by texting H4H to 41444 and following the prompts. Donations of any amount are encouraged. \nIn three years\,  the campaign has raised nearly $1\,000\,000 in cash donations and provided thousands of meals to help alleviate food insecurity in the region. Local food banks are experiencing high demand as more children\, families\, seniors\, veterans\, and communities of color struggle with economic hardship\, job loss\, homelessness during the pandemic\, and worry about how to keep up with the current pace. \n“We believe in ‘food first’ and that no matter who you are\, where you’re from\, how you shop or what you like to eat\, everyone deserves to have fresh\, affordable and easy-to-enjoy food that tastes amazing\, said Vanessa Rosales\, director\, corporate affairs\, Food 4 Less. “We are dedicated to giving back to the communities we serve\, and this holiday season is especially critical.” \nIn addition to the Help 4 the Hungry drive\, Ralphs and Food 4 Less will donate nearly $150\,000 which equates to 600\,000 meals to local community organizations working to end hunger as part of the company’s Zero Hunger | Zero Waste initiative. \n  \nMore information on how to donate can be found at Ralphs.com and Food4Less.com. \n  \nAbout Ralphs  \nAt Ralphs\, a company of The Kroger Co. SLO City Manager Derek Johnson will share how the City met this challenge\, shifted their operating structures\, acted rapidly to support business\, and the possibility of making these changes permanent. \n\nEATING LOCAL & STAYING SAFE\nWhen restaurants were forced to close at the onset of the pandemic\, local farms also felt the pressure — but soon after\, they experienced a resurgence of local customers at farmers’ markets\, signing up for Community Supported Agriculture boxes\, and showing up at farm stands. Agriculturalist of the Year Jerry Rutiz will share what that shift was like for Rutiz Farms and where they stand today. \n\nTHE PANDEMIC’S BEST FRIEND\nAmericans trying to fill the void with canine companions has arguably been the cutest buying frenzy of this year. Woods Humane Society CEO\, Neil Trent will share insights into the mass exodus of shelter pets and the problem no shelter ever thought they’d have — a shortage of animals to fill the endless demand for adoption. \n\nPEOPLE FINALLY WASH THEIR HANDS\nAt the start of this year\, no one would have imagined Dr. Penny Borenstein being a household name — especially her. And while she would be the first to admit that\, in a typical year\, public health is doing a good job when you forget it exists. County Health Officer Dr. Borenstein has some positive outcomes to share from this public health crisis and being thrust into the spotlight. \n\nHave you purchased your 2021 Annual Pass yet?\n\nDon’t miss a single program next year!
