SUMMARY:Front Porch Community Nights
DESCRIPTION:Front Porch is a free coffee house and community space located just off campus of Cal Poly. We primarily serve the student population of San Luis Obispo. Every Wednesday between March 31 and June 2\, we will have a food distribution from 4 to 5 for students to pick up ingredients to make a meal for their household at home\, or pick up prepared food to take home and share with their household. Food pickups are from our physical location\, 1468 E Foothill Boulevard. \nAt 6\, we have a community gathering where we do trivia or facilitate a discussion on current issues in our community at the local or national level. We hold these events either on zoom (zoom ID 805 805 1468) or outdoors and socially distanced at Throop Park.  We call this combination of food distribution and discussion/trivia “Front Porch Community Night.”

SUMMARY:Spokes Symposium: Taking Stock of Your Financial Health and Viability (Session 1 of 3)
DESCRIPTION:Spokes Symposium 2021 brings together experts in the field and regional nonprofit leaders to discuss taking stock\, pivoting\, and building collaborations to survive and thrive during times of great change.  \nThe virtual event will take place from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on three consecutive Thursdays\, April 13\, 20\, and 27. \nTopics in this three-part webinar series include: \n• Taking stock of your financial health and viability\n• Collaboration for long-term success\n• Nuts and bolts of forming collaborations \n\nSession 1 \nTaking Stock of Your Financial Health and Viability \nThis first part of this series will address the simple steps every organization should do to evaluate their financial situation and plan in the face of an extended economic downturn and disruption of normal operations.  \n\nKeynote: Doug Green \nSenior Manager\, La Piana Consulting \nDoug will be our keynote speaker for both Session 1 and Session 2. Doug works with nonprofit leaders to help them do their good work more effectively. His consulting is informed by diverse experiences with nonprofits and organizations in times of great change. In the 1980s S&L crisis\, he supported the first modern interstate banking mergers with financial analysis. He also led an AIDS services organization during the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic\, and has been a consultant to nonprofits during the Great Recession and its uneven recovery. His past clients include Lotusland\, the Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum\, the California Network of Family Strengthening Networks\, Kids and Families Together\, San Diego Natural History Museum\, and Surfrider Foundation. \nPanelists \nEach of our panelists leads an organization that has faced major COVID-related challenges yet found creative\, effective ways to adapt. Learn about their struggles and successes. \nWendy Lewis is the President and CEO of the El Camino Homeless Organization (ECHO). The organization has seen a dramatic increase in need for services since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Wendy will share her insights on how they met the challenge. In her three years with ECHO she has helped expand the organization’s reach\, from 50 beds at one facility to 140 at three facilities. Before ECHO\, Wendy worked at the Food Bank Coalition for 10 years and led the building of their 20\,000 square foot headquarters. Wendy grew up in Lompoc\, attended Cal Poly\, and resides in Atascadero with her family. \nKevin Harris is the Managing Artistic Director of San Luis Obispo Repertory Theatre (SLO REP). Kevin will showcase how SLO REP\, like many other performing arts organizations nationwide\, has adjusted to a new reality of providing programming during the pandemic. He served as the Artistic Director of Centerpoint Theatre Group in San Luis Obispo and co-wrote and directed an original play with Ashtar Theatre in Palestine. Kevin has taught at the University of Iowa\, University of Chicago\, and has led dozens of workshops on A Practical Handbook for the Actor across the country. He is very happy to be here on the Central Coast with his two beautiful children\, Dominick and Ella. \nBettina Swigger serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Downtown SLO. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a dramatic impact on downtown SLO businesses and hindered most regular events. Bettina will share how the organization has adapted to help their members in crisis and continue to attract visitors to Downtown SLO. She served as the executive director of Festival Mozaic for 7 years and was voted one of the Top 20 under 40 by the SLO Tribune in 2012. It may be something as simple as sharing space or staff. It could be the services offered by your highly specialized nonprofit would be more sustainable as a program under the umbrella of a larger organization. On the flip side\, if your organization is experiencing growing pains\, there may be a nonprofit out there already offering a program much like what you want to offer yourself. What kind of partnership might work to everyone’s advantage? Find out in Session 2.\nNuts and Bolts\nIntrigued by ideas from Session 2 but you don’t know where to begin? Whether it’s sharing resources\, forming alliances\, acquiring programs\, merging\, or simply winding down your nonprofit\, Session 3 will provide expert and experienced guidance.\n\n\nhttps://vimeo.com/531991059 \nSession 2 \nApril 20\, 2021 12 – 1:30 PM \nCollaboration for Long-Term Success \nDuring this part of the series\, Spokes will invite an expert in the field to discuss the many types of partnerships and why they can benefit an organization’s operations. SUMMARY:Cal Poly Arts presents\, Nat Geo's "Women and Migration"
DESCRIPTION:Never before has the world been more tightly woven and the movement of people greater between and within continents and countries. Although COVID-19 has slowed migration\, in 2019 more than 270 million people—nearly half of them women—were living in countries other than the one where they were born. Drawn by the promise of a better future\, women increasingly have traveled to wealthier countries\, taking jobs in child- and eldercare and domestic work\, as well as manufacturing and agriculture—a shift described as “the feminization of migration.” For women who are forced to leave home because of famine or violence\, migration is a gamble for their very survival. \nPhotographers with The Everyday Projects\, who use their medium to challenge stereotypes and amplify storytellers worldwide\, have come together to document the impact of migration on women around the globe in a major National Geographic magazine feature and several online stories. The project was created with additional support from the National Geographic Society.

Learn about the benefits and challenges resulting from their decision. \nJennifer Adams is the Executive Director of Stand Strong in San Luis Obispo. She will share insights into merging two important social services organizations in our community. Jennifer has spent the past 25 years working in the gender-based violence field. SUMMARY:Webinar | Cal Poly Presents: Amazon Web Services Discovery Days
DESCRIPTION:Cal Poly will host its first Amazon Web Services (AWS) Discovery Days on April 14 and 21\, allowing students and professionals access to free one-day training events to introduce AWS cloud services. \nThe AWS Discovery Days are designed to provide a glimpse into a variety of cybersecurity\, cloud optimization\, digital literacy and high-tech topics with the goal of creating interest in and an overall understanding of cloud computing and AWS infrastructure services. \nOn April 14 from noon-3 p.m.\, Cal Poly will offer a Discovery Day session at the virtual UC Cyber Security Summit. Both events offer a great way for interested individuals to learn more about AWS fundamental cloud concepts and services. \nThose who participate in a Discovery Day event will gain a deeper understanding of AWS core services and benefits.
