SUMMARY:Memorial Weekend Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:The Village of Arroyo Grande will not be hosting the Strawberry Festival or Strawberry Celebration this month\, but residents and visitors can still participate in something significant to commemorate Memorial Day weekend. Merchants in the Village are donating a portion of their sales this weekend to support the Kristin Smart scholarship. \nFunded by the nonprofit organization Justice For Kristin\, the Kristin Smart Scholarship is a way to celebrate and remember Kristin’s life\, hopes\, dreams and ambitions—by financially helping other young women realize theirs. The scholarship grants are awarded annually to college-bound female students from San Luis Obispo and San Joaquin Counties. For a minimum of 10 years\, the goal is to annually award $2\,500 or greater scholarship grants to those selected by the awards committee. \nLook for purple balloons throughout the Village of Arroyo Grande to identify participating businesses. For more information about the scholarships\, please visit kristinsmart.org/kristin-smart-scholarship. \n“We encourage residents and visitors to shop in the Village to support the small businesses who are struggling to recover from the impacts of COVID\,” said South County Chambers of Commerce President/CEO Jocelyn Brennan. \n \nPlease contact South County Chambers of Commerce at office@southcountychambers.com or (805) 489-1488 with any questions.

SUMMARY:Atmospheres Deep Exhibition to Explore Humans Connection to the Ocean
DESCRIPTION:San Luis Obispo Museum of Art Reopens for Visitors  \n Atmospheres Deep Exhibition to Explore Humans Connection to the Ocean  \nMarking San Luis Obispo Museum of Art’s (SLOMA) first public show since the beginning of the pandemic\, Atmospheres Deep will premiere for the public at the end of May. This multimedia group exhibition examines coastal regions above and below the ocean’s surface to emulate these atmospheres and uncover human impact on the ocean. The artworks selected for Atmospheres Deep present the feeling of increasing atmospheric pressure experienced during ocean exploration. Atmospheres Deep begins Saturday\, May 29\, and runs through Sunday\, August 1. Reflected in the reopening\, the Museum also announces new hours of 11 a.m. to 5p.m. from Thursday – Monday each week.   \nPresented in collaboration with SUPERCOLLIDER\, Atmospheres Deep draws metaphorical parallels between the real and the psychological pressure we experience in reaction to an impending ecological tipping point for the overall health of marine ecosystems.  \nThe artists featured in the exhibition include Christine Wertheim\, Carolina Caycedo\, Courtney Mattison\, Stephen Ehret\, Elena Soterakis\, Maru Garcia\, Isabel Beavers\, Danielle Parsons\, Richelle Gribble\, Emma Akmakdijan\, among others. For the Atmospheres Deep exhibition\, each artists’ work embodies a desire to rekindle society’s relationship with the world’s oceans and illustrates these critical issues in a range of mixed media video works\, sculptures and paintings.  \n“SLOMA is thrilled to be reopening to our public so we can continue our mission of being accessible\, relevant and exciting to the community we serve\,” said Leann Standish\, executive director of SLOMA. “The California Central Coast region benefits so much from the ecological beauty and diversity of the ocean. Atmospheres Deep will really strike a cord with our regional audiences and highlight important issues.”    \nIn celebration of the Atmospheres Deep exhibition\, SLOMA will host a Zoom panel discussion on June 23 from 6–7 PM PST. The panel discussion will be moderated by Guest Curators Richelle Gribble and Emma Akmakdjian with conversation between Maru Garcia\, Christine Wertheim Elena Soterakis\, and Benjamin Ruttenberg\, marine biologist and Director of Cal Poly’s Center for Coastal Marine Science. Interested parties may register for the panel discussion on the exhibition webpage: https://sloma.org/exhibition/atmospheres-deep/  \nIn addition to reopening\, SLOMA is launching “Gallery on the Go”\, free family art making activities every Second Saturday. For Atmospheres Deep\, the “Gallery on the Go” art kits will contain paintable ocean-themed postcards with Spira algae pigment to be used for the watercolor painting activity. The activity encourages people to think creatively about the use of ocean byproducts and sustainable artistic materials.  \nAtmospheres Deep is generously sponsored by Barbara Renshaw with additional support from Hotel SLO\, Pacific Western Bank and PG&E.   \nSLOMA will also be hosting Objectifying\, an exhibition featuring the sculptures of Elisa Ortega Montilla\, beginning May 29 through June 27\, 2021. Montilla’s work explores the objectification of women’s bodies and mixes fine woodworking with repurposed textiles\, mostly women’s undergarments. These mixed-media sculptures focus on three fundamental parts of who she is: her experience of being a woman and her feminist values; her feelings of acculturation from living in the US while maintaining her Spanish identity; and her opposition to consumerism and commitment to environmental sustainability. In conjunction with this exhibition\, Montilla will be giving an artist talk discussing her practices and the role of feminism in contemporary art via Instagram Live on Wednesday\, June 2 from 6–6:30 PM PST. Viewers can access the conversation at @SLOMuseumOfArt.

SUMMARY:Woods Humane Society ‘Oz’ Themed Virtual Fundraiser - There’s No Place Like SLOme
DESCRIPTION:Woods Humane Society Announces ‘Oz’ Themed Virtual Fundraiser \n‘There’s No Place Like SLOme’ Live Auction and Behind-the-Scenes Event Set for June 12\, 2021 \nTickets are now available for Woods Humane Society’s June 12th virtual fundraising event and live auction\, There’s No Place Like SLOme. The Wizard of Oz-themed event\, scheduled for 5 p.m.\, will feature a raffle and live auction in addition to special\, behind-the-scenes glimpses of the shelter’s dogs and cats\, and of their proverbial journey down the “yellow brick road” through Woods Humane Society\, and on to their adoptive homes. \n“This event will be unlike anything Woods Humane Society has ever hosted\,” says Woods CEO and SLOme “Wizard” of Ceremonies\, Neil Trent. “The unparalleled circumstances of the pandemic have\, sadly\, made our annual in-person gala event impossible\, but they have also inspired this one-of-a-kind opportunity for our community and supporters to join us from the comfort of their homes\, with their pets\, to see for themselves the dogs and cats in our shelter and aspects of our animal rescue efforts that they would not otherwise see.” \nThe event\, sponsored by lead sponsor Saint Francis Capital Wealth Management as well as Mechanics Bank\, Adamski Moroski Madden Cumberland & Green LLP\, Lance Parker Wealth Management\, Corvus Wealth Advisors\, Walsh Engineering\, Pismo Beach Veterinary Clinic\, Elemental Wealth Advisors\, New Times SLO\, and KSBY\, will feature a short\, Oz-themed original film\, with a Woods-alumnus dog\, playing “Toto\,” followed by live cameos by Woods staff and animals. In solidarity with San Luis Obispo businesses affected by the pandemic\, the evening’s raffle and live auction will highlight local\, SLO County services and goods. \n“Toto’s Adventure” general admission tickets to the event ($25 each) include a raffle ticket\, while a limited number of VIP “We’re Off to See the Wizard” tickets ($150) include a Dorothy’s Basket of themed and locally-sourced event goodies. \n“All proceeds from this critical fundraising event will go toward helping the more than 3\,000 animals that Woods Humane Society cares for each year\,” Trent says\, explaining that\, as a nonprofit dog and cat adoption center\, Woods Humane Society is supported solely by donations\, grants\, bequests\, fundraising events and fees for services. “Without the abiding support of our community\, which has sustained us even during the challenges and unknowns of the last year\, we could not continue our mission to provide animals in need with the excellent care they deserve or bring them hope for a brighter future in a forever home.” \nWoods Humane Society spends an average of $800 per animal to provide industry-leading shelter\, veterinary care\, training\, and adoption services at its facilities in San Luis Obispo and Atascadero. Working closely with overcrowded partner shelters across the state\, and with individuals who are no longer able to care for their pets\, the organization has helped more than 1\,900 animals so far in 2021 alone. As part of its commitment to managing homeless pet populations\, its medical team also performs 4\,000 spay/neuter surgeries each year\, for animals in their care as well as for partner rescue organizations and for publicly owned pets. \nTo watch the There’s No Place Like Home event trailer\, learn more about the event\, buy tickets\, or donate\, visit www.WoodsHumane.org/SLOME.

SUMMARY:Shop\, Sip and Stroll in Downtown Morro Bay
DESCRIPTION:After what’s been a truly trying year\, the Morro Bay Chamber of Commerce is excited to kick off the full reopening of our economy with a two-part series called “Shop\, Sip and Stroll”. These community events will start Wednesday\, June 16th at 5:30pm on the Embarcadero\, with the second event on Wednesday\, June 30th in Downtown Morro Bay. \n  \nThe Morro Bay Chamber’s new Membership Director\, Lynsey Hansen\, has organized an event designed to bring residents of Estero Bay and SLO County together to reconnect with one another and with business owners who have worked so hard to keep their doors open throughout the pandemic. Says Hansen\, “Our community did such a great job supporting local businesses over the last 15 months. We want to make sure that ‘Shop Local’ support is here to stay.” \n  \nCommunity members are encouraged to visit the Chamber’s Facebook event page for the latest information about the Shop\, Sip and Stroll event and future events: www.facebook.com/morro.chamber/events. Details are provided about participating businesses\, local beer\, wine and spirits beverage sponsors\, and a map of the walkable event is available. Live musicians will be performing throughout the route and some vacant commercial storefronts will be open to invite aspiring entrepreneurs to explore the business opportunities Morro Bay has to offer. This is a free community event and we’ll have some fun complimentary stickers proclaiming that “Morro Bay is back in 2021\, and better than ever!” Complete information can be found on our website: www.morrochamber.org. \n  \nThe Chamber also has events in the works this July for the North Morro Bay and Quintana business districts. The “Property Walk and Talks” series\, launched via Facebook Live during the pandemic\, will continue to highlight the many unique small businesses within the Morro Bay community. The series will place focus through the early summer on the Quintana area during construction of the new water pipeline; businesses are open and ready to deliver the same exceptional service they always have. Property Walks are hosted live by Chamber CEO\, Erica Crawford\, and can be viewed\, along with previous walks\, on our Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/morro.chamber/videos. \n  \n  \nAbout Morro Bay Chamber of Commerce \nThe Morro Bay Chamber of Commerce is a 501(c)(6) non-profit established in 1956 to promote a local economy of opportunity. SUMMARY:12 PM | Working Lunch with Two Broads Ciderworks
DESCRIPTION:Grab lunch from your favorite local restaurant (or your kitchen) and join us on Friday from 12 – 12:30 PM on Facebook LIVE for a stimulating conversation with SLO Chamber President/CEO\, Jim Dantona and Two Broads Ciderworks founders\, Maggie and Morgan. \nAbout this week’s guests: Maggie Przybylski and Morgan Murphy have been making cider professionally in San Luis Obispo since 2017\, focusing on cider made from local and heirloom fruit. In early 2020\, they hired a contractor to remodel their warehouse into a tasting room\, patio\, and production area right before Covid-19 shut down the world. They made it through the worst of the pandemic by switching to direct to customer sales\, running a successful Kickstarter campaign\, and support from small business grants and community assistance programs. With just a few more DIY projects for the tasting room\, they are looking to open to guests this summer. Maggie and Morgan are excited to finally be able to share cider directly with the public and provide an inclusive space for the community to gather\, especially those that identify as LGBTQIA+.
