SUMMARY:Christmas Care Packages with United Way
DESCRIPTION:United Way of San Luis Obispo County Announces Community Assistance Needed-Care Packages for Christmas \nFor the past 24 years\, on Christmas Day\, the San Luis Obispo community has generously provided our County’s homeless/underserved population with a wonderful home-cooked holiday dinner\, live musical entertainment and essential warm winter clothing/sleeping bag care packages. \nThe COVID pandemic has exacerbated many domestic crises particularly homelessness and food insecurity. The dueling realities of both homelessness and the pandemic make these individuals and families one of the most vulnerable populations throughout the U.S. and here in San Luis Obispo. Many of these folks are already in poorer health than the general population and have had reduced access to basic services and shelter. \nThis Christmas\, a delicious dinner and new winter clothing care package items will be distributed at the Odd Fellows Hall in a ‘to-go’ manner for both walk-in and drive-through clients. Additionally\, pre-packaged ‘to-go’ meals and care packages will also be distributed at 40 Prado and several pre-designated locations through San Luis Obispo County. Last year\, 600 meals were served. \nDespite the stringent safety precautions we will be adhering to\, we hope to spread a little joy and trust that the care packages provided will help the local homeless population endure our cold wet winters. \nWe are in tremendous need of financial assistance this year. Please help us to continue this tradition by donating to the Care Packages for Christmas fund. You can donate on the United Way of SLO County website at www.unitedwayslo.org and click on the Care Packages for Christmas icon. \nAlso\, checks can also be mailed to:\nUnited Way San Luis Obispo County\nPO Box 14309\nSan Luis Obispo\, CA 93406\nPlease write “Care Packages for Christmas” on the memo line. \nAll donations are tax-deductible. For more information about this event\, please contact Sheri Eibschutz at sherie5678@aol.com or leave a message at 805-594-1999.\nWe invite you to join us to support this critical work in our community by making a donation to Care Packages for Christmas this holiday season. Visit www.unitedwayslo.org/donate or call\n805-541-1234. \nThank you in advance for this consideration!

SUMMARY:Cal Poly Presents: Snarky Puppy
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \nWinner of four Grammy Awards\, including 2021’s “Best Contemporary Instrumental\,” the virtually unclassifiable\, genre-defying\, jazz/funk/fusion sound of Snarky Puppy is a magical buffet of jazz styles and musicianship. At its core\, this 19+ collective represents the convergence of multiple American music cultures with various accents from around the world\, filled with driving beats\, hot horns\, and sweeping\, sometimes raucous rhythms that dance from piece to piece and the change-ups in between! But more than the cultural diversity of the individual players\, the defining characteristic of Snarky Puppy’s music is the infectious\, improvisational joy of performing together in a perpetual push to grow creatively. (High-volume performance) Sponsored by Coleen & Ray Mattison\, Jeff & Andi Portney\, KCBX 90.1 FM\, The KRUSH 92.5 and New Times \n\n\nPreview the Show\n

SUMMARY:Cal Poly Arts Hip Hop Nutcracker
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA holiday mash-up for the whole family\, The Hip Hop Nutcracker is back and better than ever. Directed and choreographed by Jennifer Weber\, The Hip Hop Nutcracker is a contemporary dance spectacle set to Tchaikovsky’s timeless music. A unique and joyful event\, this afternoon production is performed by a supercharged cast of a dozen all-star dancers\, a DJ\, a violinist\, and special guest MC Kurtis Blow\, one of hip hop’s founding fathers. \nJust like the original\, The Hip Hop Nutcracker finds Maria-Clara and the Nutcracker Prince going on a dream adventure\, battling a gang of mice\, visiting the land of sweets\, and learning the lessons of the holiday season. Innovative digital graffiti and visuals transform the landscape of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s beloved story from traditional 19th Century Germany to the vibrant\, diverse sights and sounds of contemporary New York City. Through this re-mixed and re-imagined version of the classic\, the dynamic performers of The Hip Hop Nutcracker take us on a journey that celebrates love\, community\, and the magic of the holiday season. SUMMARY:Festival Mozaic Presents: Sierra Hull with Dead Horses
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \nIn her first 25 years alone\, singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Sierra Hull hit more milestones than many musicians accomplish in a lifetime. After making her Grand Ole Opry debut at the age of 10\, the Tennessee-bred virtuoso mandolinist played Carnegie Hall at age 12\, then landed a deal with Rounder Records just a year later. Hull’s widely acclaimed album Weighted Mind — a Béla Fleck-produced effort nominated for Best Folk Album at the 2017 Grammy Awards — was described by NPR as “stunning\,” with Hull’s artistic trajectory compared by the Chicago Tribune to bluegrass crossover star Alison Krauss. \nHull’s fourth full-length for Rounder is an elegantly inventive and endlessly captivating album called 25 Trips. Revealing her profound warmth as a storyteller\, 25 Trips finds Hull shedding light on the beauty and chaos and sometimes sorrow of growing up and getting older. Encompassing everything from bluegrass to folk-pop to ethereal alt-rock\, 25 Trips remains rooted in the sophisticated musicianship that Hull has cultivated almost her entire life. \n\n\n\nDead Horses isn’t a band in the conventional sense. Rather\, it’s an intimate\, folk-inspired conversation between two close friends. At its core\, the participants are guitarist/singer Sarah Vos and bassist Daniel Wolff. To date\, Dead Horses has released three studio albums\, an Audiotree Live Session\, three singles\, a two-song EP\, and\, most recently an eclectic five-song EP\, Birds. Dead Horses weave together a vibrant patchwork of classic and contemporary influences that span trad roots\, indie- folk\, and other experimental musical idioms. Rolling Stone lauded the duo’s “smoky vocals [and] cinematic lyrics” and named the band an “Artist You Need to Know.”\n\n\n\n\nTickets start at $35.\n\nLocation: Clark Center for the Performing Arts\, 487 Fair Oaks Avenue\, Arroyo Grande\, CA

SUMMARY:I’d Tell You If I Could - Early Preview
DESCRIPTION:This Fall\, the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art is proud to present I’d Tell You If I Could\, an exhibition by London-based artist William Brickel. The exhibition will consist of large paintings and works on paper with an array of different mediums including oil paint\, charcoal\, conté\, and watercolor. \nThe figures in Brickel’s works are partly representations of himself\, but are also standalone actors that perform and draw out an emotional distress and catharsis to which we are made witness. Brickel projects his face onto the visage of his subject matter. At once intimately personal and emotionally closed off\, each figure is absorbed into the theatricality of their two-dimensional world\, as the viewer is cognizant of their emotional intensity. For Brickel\, these scenes are representations of his lived experience; each canvas is a window into a state of emotional vulnerability. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSLOMA members and their guests are invited to an exclusive Member Preview of I’d Tell You If I Could on Friday\, November 12 from 6 to 8 PM. Please RSVP with the form below by Wednesday\, November 10. Check-in at the Mission Plaza double doors.
