SUMMARY:"I'd Tell You If I Could"
DESCRIPTION:Now on view: “I’d Tell You If I Could” features paintings by U.K-based artist William Brickel. \nThe figures in William Brickel’s work presented in this exhibition are partly representations of himself\, but are also standalone actors that perform emotional distress for us to see. Each figure is absorbed in their two-dimensional world\, as the viewer is aware of their emotional intensity. Both intimately personal and emotionally closed off\, Brickel projects his face onto his subject matter. For Brickel\, these scenes are representations of his lived experience and each canvas is a window into a relatable state of vulnerability. This exhibition will be on display until February 5\, 2022.

SUMMARY:SLO Museum of Art Presents: Exposure/Composure
DESCRIPTION:While photography has historically been valued for its ability to depict our world objectively\, there are some photographers who seek to reveal it to us by abstracting objects and moments they observe. By carefully composing shapes\, forms\, colors\, and textures\, they create new ways of seeing our material world. \nThis exhibition explores examples of abstract photography created by members of The Photo Society. \nArtists on display include Bob Canepa\, Kathleen Bosch\, Erik Olson\, Gary Smaby\, Pat Brown\, Yael Korin\, James O’Donnell\, Cat Evans\, Nic Stover\, and Patrick McGinnis \nBanner image: Gary Smaby\, Neptune\, 2017\, photograph printed on aluminum \n\nThe Museum of Art is open from 11 AM to 5 PM\, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Admission is free.

SUMMARY:SLO Museum of Art Presents | Marrin Lee Martinez: Touchy Touchy
DESCRIPTION:The objects on display in this exhibition are a collection of kinetic creatures that explore a mother’s physical sensitivity to their child’s constant touch. Visitors are invited to interact with the forms\, as suggested by adjacent action words. This action is a symbolic provoking of “The Mother\,” who in turn reacts dramatically\, becoming a spectacle for others to witness. Created by artist Marrin Lee Martinez\, each work embodies her feelings in Motherhood; an experience that is both chaotic and magical. She references frenetic energy with bright colors – both attractive and mysterious – giving visuals to some of the most complex emotions a parent feels when caring for their child. Do you dare climb\, poke\, spin\, push\, or tug? If you do\, please be gentle. We wouldn’t want Mom to freak out! \nAbout the Artist\nMarrin Lee Martinez (b. 1989) is a multidisciplinary artist living and working on California’s Central Coast. Through her creative work and community engagement\, she is an advocate for maternal mental health. In Motherhood\, Marrin has found rhythm in the visual arts. Her work has been shown at several cause-driven events\, including Phase One Foundation’s Art vs. Cancer at Various Small Fires in Los Angeles. Marrin earned her Undergraduate Degree from Emerson College\, followed by a vibrant career in the Performing Arts. Notably\, she has performed at LACMA’s Bing Theatre\, internationally with The Walt Disney Company\, and taught dance at private studios all over Southern California. \n\nThe Museum of Art is open from 11 AM to 5 PM\, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Admission is free.

SUMMARY:Spira – Movement Arts Collective at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:Spira – a special performance and workshop by the Movement Arts Collective at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art \nFriday\, January 7 – performances at 5:30\, 6pm and 6:30pm \nSaturday\, January 8 – performance at 11:15am and 12:15pm\, each followed by a participatory movement workshop \nMaartje Herman’s Spira is a dance shaped and inspired by Mark di Suvero’s sculpture Mamma Mobius\, its swirling shape and positive and negative space\, but also it’s rough cuts and material heaviness. Herman’s says\, “I see it as a merging of two forms\, the elemental and the human.  Spirals can go both up and down\, just like our lives can go up and down.  I also was fascinated by the fact that Mamma Mobius is cut from one piece of steel\, that its cuts go in many directions but in the end form a whole\, much like how we as people can go in many directions but in the end form one whole interconnected being\, independent of time\, or birth\, or death.” \nThe dance features 4 dancers from the Movement Arts Collective and is set to music from various artists and genres. \nOn Saturday\, Ryan Lawrence will provide guided movement workshops for people of all ages and abilities.  In the workshop we will focus on how we can appreciate the sculpture through movement and perspective.  Ms. Herman’s work Spira will provide a jumping off point for exploration as well as a structure for choreography and improvisation with participants having the opportunity to be both observer and mover.

SUMMARY:Creating Missing Middle Housing by Building A Better SLO
DESCRIPTION:How can SLO encourage higher density housing that is affordable to middle class workers?\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nIs ‘Missing Middle’ the solution to SLO’s housing woes? \nBetween a large\, single-family home and a towering apartment building\, there is a sweet spot of housing that used to be the backbone of our neighborhoods but has lost its place over the past 50 years. As our community and the entire state grapple with the need for affordable housing and housing in general\, infill projects take a front row seat. \nTony Perez\, Senior Associate with Opticos Design\, will share his knowledge and experience of small-scale housing in cities around the country and the world\, with historic context and\, more critically\, current policies and programs that local communities can use right now for housing that supports equity\, affordability and character. \nFor public safety\, this event is only open to those who are fully vaccinated. Please bring proof of vaccination. Please read our Health & Safety Information before purchasing your tickets. \nAbout Ubu’s Other Shoe & Staged Readings\nA staged reading is a form of theatre without sets or full costumes and props. The actors read from scripts\, sometimes using music stands. They may be seated\, stand in fixed positions\, or incorporate minimal stage movement. \nSLO REP’s staged reading series is named after the infamous trilogy of plays written by Alfred Jarry (Ubu Roi) that were banned from the stage after riots erupted on opening night. Ubu’s Other Shoe pays homage to the spirit of Jarry and to all artists who strive to explore the fringes of their art. This exciting series exists to offer actors\, directors and audience members an opportunity to experience incredible plays that do not necessarily fit into our regular main stage season. Combine the virtuosic wail of Jimi Hendrix\, the soul of BB King\, and the fire of Bill Monroe\, and add a whole lot of cello\, and you get the Dirty Cello band. \n  \nDirty Cello performs all over the world\, from Iceland to Israel\, from Scottish castles to underground caves presenting an energetic and wild show that’s been described as\, \n“Dirty Cello’s music is all over the map: funky\, carnival\, romantic\, sexy\, tangled\, electric\, fiercely rhythmic\, and textured\, and only occasionally classical.” by Oakland Magazine. \n  \n“The band plays every style imaginable\, and does some fantastic covers. (Their rendition of “Purple Haze” is incredible.) But what is most spectacular about them is hearing the depth of soul in Roudman’s playing—it goes beyond what most people would expect from the instrument. She plays it with so much heart\, you’ll wonder why more bands don’t have a cellist.” Good Times Santa Cruz

SUMMARY:Cal Poly Presents: Christian Elliott – Why Be Good? Forbes Pipe Organ Series
DESCRIPTION:  \nSilent film once again comes alive in SLO! Considered a lost film for many decades\, a 35mm print of the 1929 silent comedy film Why Be Good?\, starring SLO icon Colleen Moore\, was discovered in an Italian archive in the late 1990s. Now nearly 90 years after its first release\, this newly restored version will be screened alongside a genuine period-authentic live score provided by renowned silent film organ accompanist\, Christian Elliott. Why Be Good? tells the story of Pert Kelly\, a wild but virtuous young girl\, who falls in love with Peabody Jr.\, the wealthy heir to the store where she works. At the insistence of Peabody Sr.\, who owns the store\, Pert is fired and warns his son about about the lack of virtues of the “modern” woman. On the next date\, Peabody Jr. devises a test of Pert’s virtues.Christian Elliott is one of today’s premier theatre organists who specializes in presenting historically authentic silent film accompaniment.  The protégé of legendary silent film organist Gaylord Carter\, he was fortunate to have had the tradition of silent film accompaniment passed down to him from one of the foremost film accompaniments of the silent film era.  Sponsored by Bert & Candace Forbes

SUMMARY:Surfing For Hope Hosts SLO Cal Open 2022
DESCRIPTION:Four day surf contest at the Pismo Pier \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen Surfing For Hope hosts a World Surf League Qualifying Series surf contest\, young California athletes are able to compete at the most important and recognizable events in their sport without having to leave the state or travel great distances. This also includes the ability to earn valuable WSL Qualifying Series points\, compete against international athletes\, and gain valuable competition experience.  We believe that several annual WSL Qualifying Series events are needed for California’s young athletes to maintain the same level of performance taking place around the world in other surfing regions.  Being able to compete in multiple events per year in California builds an athlete’s self-esteem and skill levels while remaining affordable as a local sport where they can drive to each event. \n

SUMMARY:Cal Poly Presents: An Evening with Fran Lebowitz
DESCRIPTION:  \nIn a cultural landscape filled with endless pundits and talking heads\, Fran Lebowitz stands out as one of our most insightful social commentators and cultural satirists. Author\, journalist\, and social observer\, her essays and interviews offer acerbic views on current events and the media\, as well as her pet peeves which include tourists\, baggage-claim areas\, after-shave lotion\, adults who roller skate\, children who speak French\, and anyone who is unduly tan. The New York Times Book Review calls Lebowitz “an important humorist in the classic tradition.” Martin Scorsese directed her Emmy-nominated Netflix series\, “Pretend It’s a City.” As a purveyor of urban cool\, many call her the “heir to Dorothy Parker.” This event will feature a 30-minute moderated conversation and a freewheeling 60-minute audience Q&A. (Ages 13+)  Sponsored by Tonya & Bob Omdahl\, George and Esther Pudlo\, 920 AM KVEC\, KCBX 90.1 FM and New Times
