In honor of International Overdose Awareness Day, a community event is scheduled for August 31, 2023, at Mitchell Park in San Luis Obispo. The event aims to raise awareness about the opioid crisis and commemorate those who have lost their lives to drug overdose. The objective is to foster a sense of community, promote education, and provide support for prevention and recovery initiatives. The event, which is free of charge, will take place from 5 P.M. to 7P.M., and community members are both invited and encouraged to attend.

Founded by Kim Lacey and her husband Dan following the accidental overdose of their son, SLO Overdose Awareness Day is a local event endorsed by the International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) organization in Australia. IOAD, established in 2001, is recognized as “the world’s annual campaign to end overdose, remember those who have passed without attaching stigma, and acknowledge the grief of the family and friends left behind.”

According o Kim Lacey, SLO’s Overdose Awareness Day will provide a platform for individuals, families, and community organizations to unite and take tangible action against the opioid epidemic. Lacey stated, “Through SLO Overdose Awareness Day, our goal is to shed light on the devastating opioid crisis that has deeply affected our families and community. Together, we can initiate meaningful actions, advocate for education, and offer support to those grappling with addiction and loss. Let us stand united, honor our departed, and strive for a future devoid of overdose. There is reason for optimism, and our collective efforts can effect change.”

Key highlights of the event will include:

  • Candlelight Vigil: solemn candlelight vigil will be held in the evening to pay tribute to individuals lost to drug overdoses and to express solidarity with affected families.
  • Guest Speakers: A panel comprising community members and healthcare professionals will share insights and personal experiences pertaining to the opioid crisis, strategies for prevention, and the significance of destigmatizing addiction.
  • Resource Fair: Mental health experts, addiction specialists, and representatives from support groups will be on hand to provide guidance, counseling, and details about local resources to individuals seeking assistance.
  • Naloxone Training: Participants will have the opportunity to partake in Naloxone training sessions, during which they will be educated on administering this life-saving medication to reverse opioid overdoses. Attendees will also receive complimentary Narcan-brand naloxone to take with them.
