Your community newspaper brought to life.
Good Morning SLO is our platform for sharing ideas, news and inspiration. A monthly program that brings community leaders, business owners, nonprofit executives and staffers together, and enables us to reconnect, engage and learn from each other.
Our goal is to provide insight into business, community and legislative issues and share the stories of those making a difference. We want audience members to leave with ideas and information about how to better their personal and professional lives.
Good Morning SLO happens on the fourth Thursday of every month except November when it is on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.
One of San Luis Obispo’s iconic voices has made it to the big leagues. CJ Silas, Cal Poly baseball announcer of more than two decades and local sports radio host, announced a San Francisco Giants Game in April and has more on the calendar. She will join us to tell the story of her sports announcing journey and her goals for her major league career moving forward.
INSPECTING HEALTH, RESTAURANT BY RESTAURANT
Ever wondered what goes into a restaurant’s health ratings? The County’s team perform regular and requested inspections and issue health permits for food facilities, results of which are posted monthly. Peter Hague, the County of San Luis Obispo’s Environmental Health Division Director, will join us onstage to shed some light on the reality of local food safety.
We all love living in SLO County, but it comes at a cost: it’s one of the least affordable places in the country to live. We know that we need more of all types of housing to continue to be a thriving region, so we’ve invited Nick Rasmussen, Habitat for Humanity’s CEO, to share more about the work they are doing to create more homes in San Luis Obispo.
Transitions Mental Health Association doesn’t just provide vital mental healthcare services, they also run Growing Grounds, a nonprofit wholesale nursery providing therapeutic horticulture, socialization opportunities and paid employment for adults with mental illness. Dan Cano, TMHA’s Vocational Services Director, will join us onstage to share more about this crucial program.
The Land Conservancy of SLO County works tirelessly to protect and preserve the open spaces that make our region so special. They just entered into an agreement for land in the eastern portion of the county that’s nearly the size of San Francisco, and we’ve invited Kaila Dettman, Executive Director, to share more about the exciting new project.
Cal Poly’s Learn By Doing education model has been taken to heart by the university’s Debate Team, which has one of the country’s only Spanish-language Debate Teams that’s working to break barriers in the speech and debate world. Alejandro Valentín Martinez, graduating Senior and Captain of the team, will share more about the groundbreaking work being done by these students.
We’ll close out the morning with a performance from Alicia Aragon Portillo from Nexus Ballroom Dance Community.
