The SRTP is a five-year business plan developed as the culmination of an 18-month-long planning effort informed by public engagement, technical analysis, and industry trends. The SRTP aims to enhance local and regional transit by improving bus services and expanding mobility options.

The draft plan will be presented at a Special City Council meeting on February 25, 2025. During this meeting, City staff will outline recommendations, including increased service frequency, expanded and new routes, and a Microtransit pilot program. The Council will also review the operating budget, capital budget, and marketing plan components associated with the draft. A final plan will be presented to the Council for adoption in April 2025.

“San Luis Obispo has experienced significant changes in recent years that affect public transportation. To better serve our community, we need a transportation network that aligns with how we live, work, shop, and enjoy life on the Central Coast,” said Alex Fuchs, Mobility Services Business Manager.

About the 2024 Short Range Transit Plan
The Short Range Transit Plan helps SLO Transit make important decisions about how to run City buses and improve transit services over the next five years. The plan incorporates input from the community over the past year and a half, including feedback from in-person and online surveys, public community and advisory body meetings, and targeted outreach to connect with those most impacted and dependent on public transportation.

Updating the SRTP is a critical part of achieving the City’s mode split objectives identified in the General Plan as well as supporting the City’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2035. The SRTP also supports regional transportation planning efforts conducted by San Luis Obispo Regional Transit Authority and by San Luis Obispo Council of Governments.

About the Special City Council Meeting

As part of the special meeting for the City Council on February 25, 2025, the Council will host this study session to discuss the proposed Short Range Transit Plan. Study sessions are typically informal and more in-depth discussions of a specific issue; while no official action by City Council may be taken, this is an opportunity for the City Council to hear from the community and provide staff with direction before taking any formal action on the topic. The City Council will also hold a Legislative Briefing prior to the study session at this special meeting.
