Sixty years ago, a passionate music educator named Dr. Wachtang “Botso” Korisheli gathered a small group of young musicians with a dream: to create a youth orchestra on the Central Coast. That dream blossomed into the San Luis Obispo Youth Symphony (SLOYS)—a thriving community that has nurtured generations of musicians.

On May 19, 2025, the Youth Symphony will bring past and present together for one unforgettable evening! The 60th Anniversary Finale Concert will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Cultural and Performing Arts Center at Cuesta College, and it’s more than just a performance— it’s a celebration of learning and love for music.

To mark its diamond anniversary, SLOYS is inviting alumni from any decade to return to the stage and perform with current orchestra members. It’s a chance to dust off their instruments, reconnect with the joy of ensemble playing and share in the music that has shaped so many young lives.

“Bringing together current students with alumni is a powerful way to celebrate the legacy and future of this incredible program,” said Grace Seng, education manager for the San Luis Obispo Symphony. “We want to give our alumni the chance to relive the magic and to show our current students what it looks like to carry that love of music throughout a lifetime.”

After merging with SLO Symphony in 2006, SLOYS became a cornerstone of the organization’s music education efforts, offering performance opportunities, mentorship and musical community.

SLOYS is composed of four ensembles—Preparatory Strings, Academy Strings, Symphonic Winds and the Concert Orchestra—offering opportunities for musicians of all skill levels. With tuition assistance and scholarships available, SLOYS remains committed to making music education accessible to all.
