Visit SLO CAL commemorates a “milestone” moment in global travel history: the 100th anniversary of The Motel Inn—the world’s very first motel—which opened its doors in San Luis Obispo on December 12, 1925. Known originally as The Milestone Mo-Tel Inn, the property forever changed how travelers experienced the open road and positioned the SLO CAL region as a pioneer in road-trip culture.
Located at 2223 Monterey Street, steps from the modern-day US 101 on-ramp, architect and developer Arthur Heineman’s Spanish Colonial Revival property, with its iconic three-stage bell tower, offered motorists a groundbreaking concept: affordable, stylish accommodations designed specifically for car travel. It was Heineman who shortened “motor hotel” down to “MoTel,” and a new term for lodging was born that is now globally recognized. The Motel Inn was perfectly situated halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles and quickly became the ideal overnight stop for those journeying along the scenic corridors of U.S. Highway 101 and the now legendary Highway 1. When its doors opened, a room at the Motel Inn cost $1.25 per night.
For decades, The Motel Inn symbolized California’s growing love affair with exploration, freedom and the open road. Although it closed in 1991, the mission-style bell tower and sign remain a tribute to its legacy, and the road trip culture continues to thrive in SLO CAL.
A century later, SLO CAL is experiencing a revival of retro-inspired boutique motels, blending nostalgia with modern amenities. Across the region, developers, hoteliers and designers are transforming vintage roadside properties into stylish, sustainable and highly curated stays, inviting visitors to experience SLO CAL with a renewed sense of nostalgia and adventure for more than an overnight stay.
“As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of The Motel Inn, we are reminded that SLO CAL has always been a place where innovative travel experiences take root,” said Cathy Cartier, President & CEO of Visit SLO CAL. “Our region’s unique location midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, along some of the world’s most scenic drives, continues to inspire travelers seeking authenticity, connection and the pure joy of the open road. Today’s boutique motel renaissance speaks to the creativity and sustainability of our community and the timeless appeal of exploring SLO CAL at your own pace.”
