San Luis Obispo County’s efforts to secure a long-term transportation funding resource reached a turning point this month as the citizen-led Better Roads For All initiative announced the suspension of its petition for the November 2026 ballot.

Earlier this year, the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce voiced its support for the proposed self-help sales tax measure, recognizing its potential to promote significant state and federal funding for infrastructure improvements in the area. While the recent development means the original measure will not move forward as planned, our goal of establishing a sustainable transportation funding solution remains firmly in place.

The suspension is due to a technical issue with the petition process that invalidated collected signatures. In just under two months, the campaign gathered more than 12,000 signatures from county residents. This indicates a widespread awareness and engagement with the issue exists within the community.

Importantly, this setback does not change the underlying need that prompted the initial movement. San Luis Obispo County continues to face challenges competing for state and federal funding due to the lack of a dedicated local source. As a result, projects that could improve roadway safety and overall infrastructure remain dormant.

Looking ahead, attention is shifting toward alternative solutions to bring a similar measure before voters. The San Luis Obispo Council of Governments (SLOCOG) is advancing a Local Roads First funding measure, which aims to address many of the same priorities. While this approach requires a higher voter approval threshold, the demonstrated support laid by the earlier campaign may help position it for success.

The Chamber remains engaged in these discussions and continues to support solutions that value long-term investment in transportation infrastructure. Safe roads and connectivity are essential for residential quality of life and the economic prosperity of local businesses. While the path forward may look different than initially anticipated, the momentum generated in recent months highlights how essential transportation investment is for the county.
