The Central Coast State Parks Association (CCSPA) will host a special screening of Western Monarch Butterflies: Protecting Our Pollinators on Monday, August 10, 2026, at the Morro Bay Theater. Tickets are $18, with doors opening at 5:00 and the film starting at 5:30 p.m.
Directed by Ian A. Nelson, the film follows the western monarch butterfly’s perilous annual migration, a journey spanning the western slopes of the Rocky Mountains to the California coast. Once numbering in the millions, western monarch populations have declined dramatically over the past few decades, a trend that scientists warn signals broader risks to pollinator health and the ecosystems that depend on them.
The screening will highlight community-led conservation efforts across the western United States that are working to restore both wild and urban habitats for monarchs and other native pollinators. Director Ian Nelson will attend the event and speak about the making of the film, followed by a brief audience Q&A.
The evening will open with a short film from CCSPA introducing the organization’s work supporting the 10 state parks of San Luis Obispo County through conservation, education and expanded public access.
