Identifying solutions for the state’s water crisis, ballot initiatives for statewide pension reform and a legislative update from the Sacramento, once again the SLO Chamber will bring the top legislators, researchers and thought leaders to speak, discuss and inform the SLO business community on the state of California.
The SLO Chamber’s fourth annual State of the State will host Senator Bill Monning, Stanford’s director of Urban Water Policy Newsha K. Ajami and former San Jose Major Chuck Reed on Friday, May 1, to discuss some of the state’s top issues.
The discussion and Q&A format will present the opportunity for attendees to hear directly from those working at the forefront and get their questions answered on some of the biggest matters facing the state.
State legislative analysis
Currently the acting senate majority leader, Monning has served the 17th Senate District since 2012 and established himself early on as a leading advocate of reducing childhood obesity and other preventable chronic illnesses. He also serves as a member of the senate committees on legislative ethics, budget, health, judiciary, natural resources and water.
Solutions for the water crisis
A gubernatorial appointee to the Bay Area Regional Water Quality Control Board, Dr. Ajami is currently the director of Urban Water Policy with Stanford University’s Water in the West and NSF-ReNUWIt initiatives. For a number of years her research has focused on the improvement of the science-policy-stakeholder interface by incorporating social and economic measures with relevant and effective communications.
Pension reform
Taking over as mayor of the tenth largest city in the nation, Chuck Reed implemented a new fiscal plan and turned 10 years of deficit and cutting into a balanced budget, restored services and hundreds of millions of dollars of savings. Through his two terms as mayor of San Jose Reed created open government, sunshine and more than 80 other ethical reforms, fundamentally changing the way the city engaged with its residents.
