Despite the attempt from outside influences to change the outcome, the SLO City Council voted Tuesday to become the first city in the county to ban the use and sale of unencased polystyrene products. While numerous hand-written opposition letters were submitted – generated in large part by, or at the urging of, the nation’s largest manufacturer of foam cups and interns from a state-wide association – the council still adopted the ordinance. After learning of the letters the Chamber contacted many of the business owners and found that some were unaware that their employees had signed on to the correspondence. The Chamber has been active on this issue for several months, surveying members, holding an informational session and bringing the issue before one of its legislative committees. The Chamber spoke at Tuesday afternoon’s council meeting, in support of the draft ordinance with reasonable exemptions as it aligns with the value the Chamber places on environmentally sustainable business practices and the protection of natural resources.
