On Sunday, October 25, 2015 at 7 p.m. in the Spanos Theatre, Cal Poly Arts presents LAS CAFETERAS and their unique “Dia de los Muertos” concert – a musical and cultural experience, celebrating the living and honoring those who have passed through dance, movement and songs.
Born in the streets of Los Angeles, Las Cafeteras are immigrant children who are re-mixing roots music and telling modern-day stories with what the Los Angeles Times has called a “uniquely Angeleno mishmash of punk, hip-hop, beat music, cumbia and rock … (Seen) live, they’re magnetic.” The band formed in 2008 with the purpose of documenting the histories of their neighborhoods through music. As musicians, they started as students of the Eastside Café, a Zapatista-inspired community space in East Los Angeles where they were influenced by the culture, storytelling, and poetic traditional music of Veracruz, Mexico.
Las Cafeteras has taken the music scene by storm with their infectious performances and have crossed genre and musical borders – from playing with bands such as Mexican icons Caifanes and Lila Downs to performing with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.
There will be a free pre-concert lecture led by KCBX host Pedro Arroyo, held in the Philips Lecture Hall beginning at 6 p.m.
