The need for more foster homes in San Luis Obispo County is at an all-time high. There are currently 351 children in San Luis Obispo County in foster care, but only 164 approved foster homes.
In an effort to increase the number of foster homes to meet the needs of children and youth in our community, the Department of Social Services has partnered with Family Care Network, Inc. to do targeted outreach and recruitment at events throughout the county during the month of May as part of National Foster Care Awareness Month. The goal is to encourage county residents to get involved in the lives of these youth – whether as foster parents, volunteers, mentors, employers or in other ways.
This month’s events include:
- May 7 – Family Care Networks Inc. 13thAnnual Miracle Mile for Kids.
- May 10 – The Board of Supervisor Proclamation to recognize May as National Foster Care Month in San Luis Obispo County. This will help spread the awareness of the need for foster parents in our community and celebrate the families who are doing this important work.
- May 14 – Together We Walk 5K Walk Fundraiser for Foster Care at Nacimiento Lake Resort.
- May 21 – Children’s Day in the Park at Atascadero Lake Park.
- May 26 – Family Care Network Inc. will host a learning seminar on Trauma Informed Care.
While the County’s first priority is to place children with relatives, having additional high-quality homes in all areas of the county is essential. By having homes in all regions, youth placed into foster care are able to remain in their community, attend the same school, maintain friendships and routines and, most importantly, feel they have some sense of normalcy.
