In an effort to educate investors who seek both financial returns and social good, Andrew Olig, a regional vice president with Calvert Investments, will discuss “socially responsible investing” during a free lecture August 17 in San Luis Obispo.

Socially responsible investing, also referred to as sustainable, socially conscious, green or ethical investing, is an investment strategy that encourages corporations to practice environmental stewardship, consumer protection, human rights and diversity. Some socially responsible investors will also avoid investments with controversial ties, such as alcohol, fast food, weapons or gambling.

In short, socially conscious investors put their money into companies that promote the values they support.

Olig, who covers the northern California region for Calvert Investments, has delivered more than 400 workshops and educational meetings to help advisors and their clients make better investment decisions. The Bay Area resident earned a B.A. in business management, with concentrations in investments, from Central College in Pella, Iowa.

The event will be held at the SESLOC Federal Credit Union’s office at 3855 Broad Street in San Luis Obispo. Doors for the event will open at 5:30 p.m., with the discussion set to begin at 6 p.m. Light refreshments will be served, and a door prize drawing will be offered to attendees.
