Canzona Women’s Ensemble presents its spring concert, “Life is a Song. Sing it!” on Sunday afternoon, March 5, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. The 26-voice group is led by co-directors Cricket Handler and Jill Anderson and accompanied by pianist Janis Johnson.

Life surprises us at every turn, and Canzona contemplates life’s passages in this afternoon of music. Themes of childhood memories, family & motherhood, romance and devotion, loss and remembrance come together in texts with a wide range of emotions, from playful, to passionate, to deeply poignant. Canzona welcomes director Colleen Chester and the young women singers of SLO High School Concert Choir in this vocal collaboration celebrating women’s voices.

Canzona holds a unique place in the community as a champion of choral music for women’s voices. The non-profit is a selective auditioned ensemble that includes 24-28 women from around the county. Their mission is to further a love and appreciation for women’s choral literature, to expand this literature by commissioning original pieces, and to present the music with consistent excellence.

The San Luis Obispo High School Concert Choir, under the direction of Colleen Chester, is a women’s ensemble of all high school grade levels. Singers perform at local community events as well as travel throughout California, sharing their passion for choral music at festivals and in choral exchanges. This ensemble has won many awards in the past and, most recently, received the 2016 Central Coast Choral Festival “Award for Choral Excellence” for their musicality and high levels of performance.

Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door, and $10 for students. They can be ordered online through the Canzona website: canzonawomen.org, or through BrownPaperTickets.com. For information, call 805-391-SONG.
