Ballots to select a fifth San Luis Obispo City Council member will soon land in mailboxes throughout the city. In order to help our members understand the candidate’s positions, the SLO Chamber recently posed four questions to the five candidates that are running for the seat.
The questions and the candidate answers can be found here.
The new council member will play a critical decision-making role on numerous issues currently in front of the city council. The council’s actions on issues such as the implementation of the City’s Economic Development Strategic Plan and the update of the Land Use and Circulation Element (LUCE) will shape the community and impact business success for coming decades. The LUCE serves as a blueprint for the city and prescribes land uses and circulation throughout the city.
Members interested in hearing directly from the candidates will have an opportunity on Tuesday, May 14 when the Chamber hosts a “Meet the Candidates” forum at at the City/County Library from noon to 1:30 p.m. Those interested in attending can register here.
Ballots are scheduled to be sent out to registered voters in San Luis Obispo on May 20 and must be returned to the City Clerk’s Office by 8 p.m. on June 18.
The SLO City Council has been operating with an empty seat since Andrew Carter resigned after serving more than six years on the council to take a job as Guadalupe’s city administrator. Carter’s last council meeting was Feb. 19.
During a special Feb. 20 meeting the SLO City Council adopted a resolution calling for a special vote-by-mail election to replace Carter.
The elected council member will serve the remainder of his term.
