Here in the 805, we live in an area of agricultural abundance, yet there are many people that go hungry. Gleaning is an opportunity for communities to come together and help fight hunger right in their own backyards, while connecting with their neighbors, reducing food waste and creating a healthier community. Every year, millions of pounds of food goes unharvested in fields and neighborhoods across our region.

Events were held between October 16, which is also World Food Day (http://www.fao.org/world-food-day/2017/home/en/) and October 24, which is National Food Day (https://nationaldaycalendar.com/national-food-day-october-24/), by gleaning organizations in the 805 region..

Throughout San Luis Obispo, Glean SLO recovered 8,912 pounds from 7 backyards, 5,175 pounds from 5 farms, 763 pounds from 2 farmers’ markets, totaling 14,850 pounds of local produce rescued over an eight day period.
