Local veterans and their families are invited to come onto Cuesta College’s San Luis Obispo Campus on April 7 to attend a free Veterans Resource Fair. The San Luis Obispo Veterans Services Collaborative (SVSC) is hosting the fair, which will bring representatives from various local agencies onto campus from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Parking will be complimentary in lots 2A and 2.

“Our goal is to provide local veterans with information on services and resources in a fun atmosphere where the entire family feels comfortable,” said SVSC Executive Vice President Sandy Murry. “Veterans who attend can get help securing their potential benefits, attend resume-writing workshops, learn job interviewing skills and financial planning strategies, obtain information on their legal rights as veterans, and more.”

The event will also include more than 20 employers and offer direct contact to the Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare system in order to address VA benefits, questions about healthcare, and best practices.

This is the first resource fair put on by the SVSC, which aims to inspire, strengthen, support and promote the military and veteran community through coordination, cooperation, and communication. Event sponsors include Cuesta College, Coast Hills Credit Union, and the Central Coast Veterans Helping Veterans organization.

This year, Cuesta College was officially designated a Military Friendly® School for the sixth time by Victory Media. The 2018 designation recognizes Cuesta College as a leader in embracing military students, and for its commitment to providing resources that ensure their success in the classroom and after graduation. Cuesta College is the only community college on the Central Coast of California to earn the designation.

Cuesta College currently serves approximately 325 veterans annually. The college maintains a Student Veterans of America Club, providing social gathering opportunities for Cuesta veterans. A dedicated Veterans Resource Center is available on the San Luis Obispo Campus and, later this year, a similar center will open on the North County Campus in the new Campus Center Building.
