slo rep The San Luis Obispo Repertory Theatre is proud to present Tennessee Williams’ iconic drama The Glass Menagerie. A theatrical piece of distinct power, The Glass Menagerie was the play that catapulted playwright Tennessee Williams to fame and confirmed his place as one of the foremost playwrights of 20th Century drama. Premiering a year before the Tony Awards came into existence, the show won the NY Drama Critics Circle Award in 1945 and has returned to Broadway five times over the past 73 years, always to great acclaim. The Glass Menagerie runs November 2 – 18, 2018 with performances Wednesday through Sunday at 7 p.m. and weekends at 2 p.m. Tickets range in price from $20-$36 and are available online or by calling (805)-786-2440.

The Glass Menagerie is a memory play told by Tom Wingfield, a merchant marine who is looking back on the Depression years he spent with his overbearing Southern genteel mother, Amanda, and his physically disabled, cripplingly shy sister, Laura. In the opening moments of the play, the character of Tom says, “The play is memory. Being a memory play, it is dimly lighted, it is sentimental, it is not realistic.” The play is intensely personal, mimicking Williams’ own life more closely than any of his other plays. The tragic, yet tender story of the Wingfield family and the night of the gentleman caller exposes the complexity of memories, and the ways in which people can never truly escape them. Commenting on the play, the playwright says, “Memory takes a lot of poetic license. It omits some details; others are exaggerated, according to the emotional value of the articles it touches, for memory is seated predominantly in the heart.”

The Glass Menagerie is directed by Erik Stein and features an extraordinary cast of actors including Suzy Newman as Amanda, Madison Shaheen as Laura, Luke Myers as Tom and Sam Lariviere as Jim O’Conner, the gentleman caller.

The show is sponsored by Pam and Mitch Nichter and Karen S. Kolba, MD. Our show director sponsors are Toni and Craig Kincaid.
