Join Cal Poly Arts as the Russian National Ballet Theatre brings their sumptuous production of “Sleeping Beauty” 7 p.m. on Sunday, February 10 at the Performing Arts Center. The Russian National Ballet Theatre has been bringing timeless ballet classics to the stages of North America since 1999. Performed by 50 top-tier dancers, this full-length, three-act ballet features music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovski and original choreography by Marius Petipa. Additional choreography and staging are created by Iryna Kovalova.

Founded in Moscow during the transitional period of Perestroika in the late 1980s, the company used their new-found creative freedom, influenced by the political movement, to invigorate the tradition of Russian ballet with new developments in dance from around the world.

In 1994, the legendary Bolshoi principal dancer Elena Radchenko was selected by Presidential decree to assume the first permanent artistic directorship of the company. Ms. Radchenko is the founder of the Russian National Ballet Theatre, focusing on upholding the grand national tradition of the major Russian ballet works and developing new talents throughout Russia, with a repertory of virtually all of the great full works which continue to enlighten, inspire, and entertain audiences across the continent. In addition to “Sleeping Beauty”, the company’s repertoire includes “Cinderella,” “Giselle,” “Don Quixote,” “Swan Lake,” and more.

A free pre-show lecture will be held at 6 p.m. in the Philips Lecture Hall, led by Cal Poly Dance Dept. emeritus professor Moon Ja Minn Suhr.

Student and adult tickets for the performance range from $28.80 – $66 and may be purchased in advance at the Cal Poly Ticket Office, Monday – Saturday, noon to 6 p.m., located on Grand Avenue on the Cal Poly campus; by phone at 805/756-4849; online at calpolyarts.org.
