Downtown San Luis Obispo is a bit more colorful, thanks to a new public beautification project. Earlier this month pedestrian light pole banner art was installed throughout the Downtown core. The project is the work of the City’s Promotional Coordinating Committee to expand on the banner art beautification work initiated earlier this year along Garden Street.

The banner art demonstrates the vibrancy of our community and conveys a sense of welcome, diversity, and inclusion to both visitors and residents. The banner art was designed by local creative firm, (iii) Design, and presents bold interpretations of familiar locales and highlights celebrations of diversity that happen throughout the City:

“Throughout this beautification project the committee’s focus was to highlight the history, spaces and events that make our community a welcoming and inclusive place,” said PCC volunteer Dana Matteson. “Our goal is to expand this project throughout the city, spotlighting other unique features that make San Luis Obispo such a special place to live and visit.”

“One of our goals at Downtown SLO, the downtown business association, is to create a welcoming environment for all, and these bright works of art celebrating our community’s heritage, icons, and diversity help us tell the story that all people belong downtown,” said Downtown SLO CEO Bettina Swigger.

The PCC and the City are working to establish a process and design standard for pedestrian light pole banners in and around the City. The City is also creating a banner design style guide for community partners to use for future banners.
