On Friday, October 11, 2013 at 8 p.m. in the Alex and Faye Spanos Theatre, Cal Poly Arts will present the Island-themed music/dance showcase, MĀLAMA KO ALOHA (“Keep Your Love”), featuring Hawaiian slack key master Keola Beamer, Native American flutist R. Carlos Nakai, jazz pianist Geoffrey Keezer, and kumu hula (hula master) Moanalani Beamer.

“Keola Beamer’s style is the best there is on the planet…There’s no better slack key player than Beamer” (Willie Nelson)

The performance brings to the live stage the key elements of the 2012 PBS TV special by the same name, as well as highlighting the Grammy Award-nominated Mālama Ko Aloha CD. The show also includes stories from Hawaiian history and legend.

The maxim of generations of the legendary Beamer family – “mālama ko aloha” or “keep (nurture & cherish) your love” – is the cornerstone of this concert, which celebrates many facets of aloha with beautiful songs from a mix of traditions as they share cultures, genres, sensibilities and humor. Their work together both showcases each artist’s unique talent and culture, while also embodying the true spirit of collaboration and aloha.

Beamer summarizes the spirit of the concert: “In a world that is increasingly violent, fractious and unforgiving, it is important to try to urge human beings to move in the opposite direction – the way of aloha. Music has the power to do this; to move hearts, to help people think about how they live in the world.”

Student and adult tickets for the performance are $39.20 and $48, respectively, and may be purchased in advance at the Performing Arts Center Ticket Office, Tuesday – Saturday, noon to 6 p.m, located on Grand Avenue on the Cal Poly campus.
