In the month of October it’s not uncommon to see superheroes of every size and shape roaming the streets for festivities. But all month long the focus of Woods Humane Society is a special breed of superheroes—with tails as varied as their stories—that will be celebrated at the 21st Annual Wiggle Waggle Walk Saturday, October 12, 8 a.m., at Mitchell Park in San Luis Obispo. K9 Superhero Tails of who-rescued-who will be the focus of this year’s fundraising dog walk benefitting Woods Humane Society.

For the first time the festivities will be held at Mitchell Park in San Luis Obispo, allowing walkers to enjoy a stroll for pups with their pups through the streets of downtown San Luis Obispo. Registration begins at 8 a.m., with costume contests beginning at 9 a.m. and a blessing of the animals at the park before the walk begins at 10:30 a.m. Walkers will return to the park for an announcement of top pledge earners and their prizes, including two-night stays in Yosemite, Napa and Sunnyvale.

October is National Adopt A Shelter Dog Month and Woods Humane Society is asking dog lovers in the area to celebrate their own stories, while supporting efforts to find forever homes and create new stories for homeless animals in our community. All proceeds generated through the Wiggle Waggle Walk go directly to humane sheltering and ongoing veterinary care of animals at Woods Humane Society. The Wiggle Waggle is San Luis Obispo County’s largest annual K9 fundraiser benefitting the work of Woods.

“Our dogs are our heroes,” said Steve Kragenbrink, Woods community programs director. “They are our constant companions, our guardians, our playmates, our entertainers, our exercise partners, our shoulders to cry on and the loves of our lives. It is a bond worth celebrating, and worth sharing with the animals in need so that they may go on to find their own tales.”

Team and individual registrations are available onsite beginning at 8 a.m. as well as online at woodshumane.org/walk prior to the event. Pledges may be made in advance to registrants or through the website. Prizes for top Individual and Team pledge earners include luxurious resort stays, a table for ten at the 2014 Tails Gala, a Bus-of-Fun and lunch at the 2014 Wine4Paws weekend and a Behind-the-Scenes tour of the Cal Poly Performing Arts Center with a wine and cheese reception. The top earning Team will also win bragging rights and the coveted Woods Cup Trophy for the year. Registration is $15 per walker.

Canine costume contests for dogs under and over 50 pounds will also be held, for best costumes in and out of theme. Thanks to the participation and support of local businesses, the Wiggle Waggle will again host a pet fair focused on enjoying life with all our four-legged friends.

“The Wiggle Waggle is our community’s celebration of the human/animal bond—a place for dog lovers to come together, share stories and support the animals that have yet to find their forever homes,” Kragenbrink said. “The more support we have from the community and the more we can promote responsible pet ownership, the more forever stories we can help write.”

The 21st Annual Central Coast Pet Hospital and ER’s Wiggle Waggle Walk for Woods Humane Society is being presented by San Luis Sourdough.
