The City of San Luis Obispo is offering several activities to help the community enjoy a fun and safe holiday season and follow County and California Department of Public Health guidelines to slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community.  The City’s Parks and Recreation Department is providing the following safe, distanced and festive activities for community members to enjoy:

  1. Neighborhood Scavenger Hunt – Grab the family and search for holiday items such as lights, trains and inflatable snowmen in your own neighborhood.
  2. SLO Holiday Home Light Map – Pick a night to go explore and see the decorated homes and displays near you! Also participate by registering your decorated home! Remember to wear a mask and stay physically distant from others.
  3. Virtual Gingerbread House Contest – Create and decorate a gingerbread house for your chance to win a SLO Parks and Recreation SWAG Bag! Email your submission to [email protected] by December 31.
  4. Hunt for Holidays Around the World – Starting December 18, join in the fun of exploring the parks for a scavenger hunt for colorful posters representing celebrations around the World. They’re hidden at a park near you:
  • Meadow Park
  • De Vaul Park
  • Islay Park
  • Throop Park
  • Sinsheimer Park
  1. Holiday Hike Challenge – Dress up in your best holiday costume, hike a City of SLO Open Space and take a photo! Tag @sloparksandrec and @pixonpeaks to be featured. Trail maps can be found online at slorangers.org
  2. SLO Skate Park Virtual Ugly Sweater Contest – Snap a photo of you riding in your favorite  ugly holiday sweater and tag @sloparksandrec to be featured! Make sure you’re wearing a helmet in the photo.

“We are pleased to provide our community members with a number of virtual or socially-distanced activities that will provide them the opportunity to still have fun while staying safe this holiday season,” said Parks & Recreation Director Greg Avakian. “The different events have been planned to encourage our community and families to explore our parks and neighborhoods in a safe manner to help celebrate the holidays”
