Calling all volunteers in SLO! Sign up to advise staff and City Council on matters affecting policies and issues and help shape the future of San Luis Obispo. The City is accepting applications for voluntary positions on the following Advisory Bodies. This is the annual recruitment to fill scheduled vacancies, along with any unscheduled vacancies that may be open. Terms begin April 1, 2022.

The City’s Advisory Bodies are groups of volunteers that advise staff and the City Council on matters that affect policy and issues that will affect the future of the community. Positions will be available on the following Advisory Bodies:

  • Active Transportation Committee – provides oversight and policy decisions on matters related to bicycle and pedestrian transportation in the City of San Luis Obispo and its relationship to bicycling and walking outside the City
  • Administrative Review Board – serves as the final decision maker for the City on administrative appeal hearings relating to administrative citations issued for certain contested San Luis Obispo Municipal Code enforcement matters that require a more detailed administrative record.
  • Architectural Review Commission – establishes architectural guidelines and rules on the design of new construction and major commercial remodeling projects.
  • Construction Board of Appeals – hears and decides appeals of orders, decisions, and determinations made by the building official relative to the applications and interpretations of various technical codes.
  • Cultural Heritage Committee – oversees a broad range of educational and technical assistance programs aimed at preserving historical and cultural resources. 
  • Human Relations Commission – advises the City Council on matters concerning social problems affecting the residents of the City, assists in tenant/landlord problems, and receives and recommends grants-in-aid to assist groups which provide human services programs
  • Jack House Committee – assists in the administration and restoration of the historic Jack House residence at 536 Marsh Street.
  • Parks and Recreation Commission – advises the City Council on park development and recreation programs and provides general guidance to the Parks and Recreation Department.
  • Personnel Board – provides a forum for airing both sides of unresolved employee grievances and disciplinary matters with its recommendations forwarded to the City Council.
  • Planning Commission – makes recommendations to the City Council for the City’s development.
  • Parks and Recreation Commission – advises the City Council on park development and recreation programs and provides general guidance to the Parks and Recreation Department.
  • Promotional Coordinating Committee – advises the Council in working to improve the quality of life for all City residents and visitors, by recommending projects to help promote the City as a regional trade, recreation, and tourist center consistent with community goals.
  • Tree Committee – makes recommendations to the Council and staff on tree policies and regulations.
  • Zone 9 Advisory Committee of the SLO County Flood Control and Water Conservation District – assists in determining the needs, desires, and financial capabilities of property owners in Zone 9 and recommends specific programs to alleviate and control flood damage, with recognition of the ecological and aesthetic values of the programs.
